L.A. Fires Claim Early Modernist Neighborhood 🏘️
In the 1940s, architect Gregory Ain designed one of the first Modernist neighborhoods in America, in Altadena, California. Called the Park Planned Homes, a community of 28 single-story homes utilizing shared green spaces between the homes. In 2014, L.A. County recognized the accomplishment and designated the Park Planned Homes an Historic District. Fire pays no attention to such designations. Of the LA wildfires, at least 20 were Park Planned Homes; at press time, only four were undamaged.
Icon to 3D Print Houses for the Homeless 🏡
The Community First! Village in central Texas provides affordable housing to Austin's homeless population. Developed by nonprofit Mobile Loaves & Fishes, it currently houses 370 formerly homeless people in tiny-house-style accommodations. Now they're getting an assist from Icon, a construction company that 3D prints houses. With backing from the Lennar Foundation (the charitable arm of Lennar, a production homebuilder), Icon will print 100 houses in an expanded portion of the village.
A Trailer That Can Move Its Own Wheels Out of the Way and Lower Itself to the Ground 🛻
Here's an impressive piece of design and engineering. Dutch company Expandable's Touchdown Trailer can be transported to site by a tractor-trailer. Once onsite, built-in legs extend downwards to take the weight of the trailer, allowing the tractor-trailer to take off. The axles then slide out from underneath the trailer, and the legs can then lower the trailer to the ground. The sides can expand outwards to create more space.
Architecture Student Develops Structural Modeling Kit, Now Sells Them Worldwide 🏗️
As an architecture student, Marcio Sequeira wanted to better understand structural behavior. Seeking a more hands-on way than equations and diagrams can provide, Sequeira began building structural models using elements connected by magnetics. He started off with wooden dowels, and experimented with plastic and rubber components before settling on springs. Today Sequiera's company, Mola, offers multiple kits and sells them in over 100 countries.
Form Follows Function: A Clever Norwegian Design Feature for Barns 🐄
Barns in Scandinavia have steeply-pitched roofs, to deal with heavy snow loads. A steeply-pitched roof also provides useful space for a hayloft or grain storage area. Stored well above ground level, there's no danger of the hay or grain being ruined by flooding, and the aboveground air circulation helps the materials dry faster. In rural Norway, farmers devised a clever solution to cut down on both by creating earthen ramps.

Architects Ask: What to Do With These Decommissioned Marble Fireplace Mantles? ❤️‍🔥
A lot of architecture think-tank stuff loses me, but this one I can both follow and get behind. Amor Immeuble is a Paris-based quartet of architects interested in material research and experimentation. They recently encountered a series of beautifully-crafted marble pieces that were once prized and are now considered waste. With their "Deposees" series, the group considers how best to preserve these pieces and integrate them into modern life.
Why a Tacoma and Certain Houses Survived the L.A. Fires 🍀
Tragically, Los Angeles resident Brandon Sanders found his home had burned to the ground in the Eaton fire. There was one good piece of news: His Tacoma had survived. To his surprise, when he tried to start it "it fired right up," he writes. If you're interested in what design decisions can harden a house against fire, in a comprehensive video—which has gone viral—homebuilder Matt Risinger analyzes two unburnt L.A. homes. One is a Greg Chasen-designed house, and the other belongs to Tom Hanks.
Bjarke Ingels Group Designs a Tent-Like Structure for Glamping ⛺️
I'm not crazy about this structure, but the other design blogs love it. Bjarke Ingels Group has designed this Softshell structure for Nokken, a company that manufactures habitats for the hospitality industry. The Softshell has a timber structure and a tent-like canvas skin. Inside is a bed and a woodburning stove, and above is a netted surface.
Cabin Anna, House that Slides Open, Goes Into Production 🏡
In 2020 we wrote about this shed-like house that slides open to the elements. It was designed by Dutch architect Casper Schols, who planned to sell pre-fabricated versions of the house for roughly $100,000. Now production has arrived, but it has crashed into reality along the way. The company Schols set up to commercialize the design, Cabin Anna, is offering two rather strangely-named options: Anna Elements, a list of a la carte options, and the Anna Collection, which is the whole she-bang.
Extreme Space Saving: Architects Design 74-Square-Foot Apartment for Themselves 🤏
Architects Beatriz Ramo and Bernd Upmeyer have designed a 74-square-foot apartment that they will use as a second home. The couple, who hail from Spain and Germany respectively, are based in Rotterdam; the apartment is sited there, in what was previously a storage unit in a residential building. Shockingly the bathroom has, next to it, a spa with both a whirlpool tub and a micro-sauna of sorts. Above the spa you can see pass-through storage units that are accessible from the sleeping space.
