𝙀𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝙂𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙎𝙝𝙚𝙥𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙨 Brindle was originally part of the breed from the beginning; one of the most influential German Shepherd Dogs of all time (Beowulf) was a brindle. Unfortunately, the color was deemed "non standard" and started to fade away some time after the breed founder's (Captain Max von Stephanitz) passing. Personally I think it is sad for certain colors and patterns to be selectively bred out. To quote the Captain himself: "no good dog is a bad color." Beowulf was the damsire to one of the greatest early German Shepherds. Imagine if Beowulf would have been excluded from the gene pool back then, simply because of his color/pattern.

Great photo from the 1980's of two well known dogs of their respective breeds -'Paddy' aka Ch Galsul Excellence (Wire Hair Fox Terrier) and Brat aka Ch Ttarb the Brag (Smooth Fox Terrier) showing each other some attitude.
