Wedding bonnet, 1837. American. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Reed, 1966 (2009.300.1560) 1830s Fashion, Moda Hippie, Victorian Hats, Romantic Period, Romantic Era, Antique Hats, 19th Century Fashion, Full Skirt Dress, American Wedding

Worn by Elizabeth Hawes Russell at her wedding in November, 1837, this is the classic bonnet form of mid-romantic period headwear. Adorned with flowers and ribbons, the exuberant broad brim attractively framed the face and and echoed the drama of the voluminous wing-like sleeves of the period's ankle-length, full-skirted dresses

With my 1830’s gown complete, it was time to move on to the Bonnet. Well, that’s not entirely true. I started work on the bonnet while I was still working on the dress. A bonnet promised to be such a fun project I couldn’t wait to get started.
