These 5 signs mean you probably need more food
As a dietitian for gymnasts, I hear story after story from high-level gymnasts struggling. And time and time again, when I do a deep dive into their fueling routine, they’re coming up short. They’re not eating enough to support their body (keep you alive and healthy, growth, development, and recovery), everyday activities (like school, PE class, or walking your dog), and training.

Signs You Might Not Be Eating Enough
Underfueling is unfortunately a common occurrence in the gymnastics community. Underfuleing leads to a low energy state that affects every system in the body and leads to a serious condition called RED-S. The symptoms include reduced endurance and strength, menstrual issues, and reduced bone health. Gymnasts need to make sure they are eating enough to fuel not only practices but their daily activities and body process as well!
What Gymnasts Need to Know About RED-S
Many of the symptoms of the serious condition known as RED-S have been normalized in the sport of gymnastics. This is a dangerous tendency since RED-S is a low energy state that affects all body systems and its symptoms (decreased endurance, menstrual disfunction, and increased fatigue) are harmful to gymnasts both in and out of the gym. Feeling tired all the time isn't normal! Gymnasts must make sure they are eating enough to meet their energy needs and fuel their practices!
What Gymnasts Need to Know About RED-S
Reduced energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) is a serious syndrome with numerous detrimental effects to all the systems in the body. Unfortunately, many gymnasts are at risk due to improper fueling (not eating enough food) and the normalization of the harmful symptoms of RED-S within the gymnastics community. Check out this week's blog post for more about RED-S and how to prevent it.
How to Fuel for Your Goals
Gymnasts use a lot of energy in the gym, which means they need to eat a lot of food to properly fuel their workouts. Proper fueling--eating every 2-3 hours--will help gymnasts feel their strongest in the gym to reach all of their training goals and get all of their summer upgrades.
