Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is one of the most ancient breeds dating back to 2,000 years old! Also known as the Songshi Quan meaning “Puffy Lion Dog” in Chinese, this breed definitely looks like a lion or bear;) The Chow Chow has a distinctive feature with their blue/black tongues that appear as purple. No other breed has this feature except the Chinese Shar Pei. The reason for the unique tongue colour is unknown all we know is it’s pretty cool! The Chow Chow originated in China and belongs to the ‘Non Sporting’ group and was originally bred as a hunter though Chows much rather prefer to lounge around the house instead. As cute and cuddly as the Chow Chow looks, these dogs are not always keen on the cuddles. Chows can be good family dogs with proper socialization however it would probably go best in an older kid household. They can be snappy and uncertain of smaller children. Chow Chows are well “cat like” since they are quiet, keep themselves clean, and are independent. These dogs are usually a one person breed and can be protective of the house. Their coat needs regular grooming and attention to prevent matting and tangling. It is important to remember to never shave or trim a double coated dog breed as it could have a harsh impact on the dogs skin. Remember their coat is there for a reason!
