Cain Slays Abel by Gustave Doré 1832-1883
This is the moment just after Cain has murdered his brother because he was jealous of the Lord receiving Abel's offering and not his. He seems bent over with the weight of what he has just done and leans wearily on a rock. Nearby can just be seen a slithering snake, perhaps symbolising the same evil that tempted Cain and Abel's parents, Eve and Adam, and caused them to be cast out of the Garden of Eden. This engraving illustrates Genesis Chapter 4, verses 8-15.
