When I first heard about Miaou I was pissed, like ‘bitch stole my look’ vibes. Okay, not really, let’s be real I was more than thankful. In actuality (since us women should come together) I was like, ‘Who is this girl?! We should probably be friends!’ As a girl born with an ass, literally I can show you baby pictures, the struggle to not only find a pair of jeans that fit but are also stylish is real. The ability to throw on a pair of high-waisted vintage Levi’s with a pair of Chucks is like my Disney princess fantasy. Stop it Carly. Get over it. It will never happen. After thirty years on this earth, I’ve found solitude in Pleats Please by Issey Miyake, at least 3% spandex and not necessarily by choice—being a ‘dress girl.’ But it’s never stopped me from trying—pretty sure I was the first person to hit the mall for a pair of Apple Bottom jeans. Of course, disappointment followed. And because you can’t blame a girl for trying ... my kindred spirit, savior of fashion’s below the waist necessity, Alexia Elkaim, persevered. Elkaim grew up wearing vintage dresses, hating denim (see all reasons listed above) and one day, decided to make cider out of apple bottoms. Close to one year ago, Elkaim shifted gears to launch Miaou, using her experience in the fashion industry to tackle the most complex item there is to create—jeans. The photographer-turned-designer took her eye capturing and casting women to create a line a bottoms that not only provide comfort, style, and durability for those who don the denim, but flattery and definition for all body shapes and sizes. Because as much as I can bitch about how hard it is for a girl with an ass to get into a pair of jeans, the truth is no matter what your body type—a good pair of stylish jeans that fit is fucking hard to come by. Period. And because there’s no denying that, it’s no wonder Miaou has not only seen instant success, but formed a following of pretty legit girls. No longer about a good girl-gang, Elkaim has created the Gucci Gang (which you can check out for yourself in this Travis Scott video) that calls on confident females who are effortlessly fashionable and beautiful. Who doesn’t want that? Below we catch up with Elkaim (and convince her to model Miaou's latest collection) about her recent transition outside of jeans debuted at our OCLA store, the heartbeat behind the perfect fit, and why it’s pretty damn ironic that curves have become “trendy” … because you know, no one has ever loved a good ass until now.
