This paper aims to identify the factors that facilitate the provision of religious accommodation in healthcare for both Muslim healthcare workers and patients, by specifically examining three issues: provision of halal food, prayer facilities, and Muslim-friendly dress codes. In this qualitative study, document analysis and secondary data analysis are conducted. Thematic analysis is conducted to identify the factors which influence religious accommodation in healthcare. The findings illustrate that the prospect of accommodating religious needs does not merely depend on the religion of the majority of the population, but on various factors, such as the country or the state where the healthcare institution is situated, the healthcare institution itself, the sections o...

It critiques the bias in methodology and terminology suffered by the research, especially among the Third World intellectuals in general, and the Arab-Islamic world in particular. The bias, according to the book, is about the abandoning of the indigenous paradigms and biases that arise from their own existential and historical situations as a result of encountering the Western framework and paradigm as not only a foreign source but also believed to be dominant even among the Arab writers and researchers. The danger of this phenomenon is so pervasive that it tends to distort the whole process and gives serious effect to the future of the affected culture and civilization.

As one of the world’s major religions, Islam’s position on the issue has also been subject of scrutiny and unfortunately, on several occasions, has been viewed with suspicions and seen as unbalanced. Islam is often regarded as a religion that prioritises men over women; men seem to possess more rights not only in such cases as polygamy and marital divorce but also in the possession of wealth through inheritance. This article attempts to provide a balanced view on the aforementioned issue by exploring the rights of women as stipulated in Islam, especially the rights of wealth possession ( ḥuqūq māliyyah ) in the family as an institution. In general, the article examines whether or not the existing rights of women render them on a par with men in regard to wealth possession. Specifically, this article addresses issues of dowry ( mahr ) and maintenance ( nafaqah ), as wel...

Hibah, in the current development, is practiced freely to the extent of being considered a favourite choice of transferring wealth. However, it is a potentially problematic practice because it opens up to preferential and unjust treatment. This paper aims to respond to some questions related to justice. How far does the principle of justice affect hibah? To which extent is it permissible to distribute property and wealth unequally among one’s children? What is the meaning of just distribution between male and female child? Are there special criteria prescribed that justify unequal distribution of hibah among children? These issues are discussed in reference to established views of classical as well as contemporary Muslim jurists. Key words: Gift (hibah), justice, unequal wealth redistribution, Islamic law.

It is not outdated rather it has gone through various developments throughout the history in order to cope up with the needs of the age. This paper studies a contemporary approach to ilm al-kalam by a contemporary theologian, Ismail Raji al-Faruqi. It examines al-Faruqi's distinct approach in comparison to a classical position of ilm al-kalam. In doing so, the study focuses on selected theological issues, namely, the relationship between reason and revelation, the principle of causality, and freewill of choice. After examining those theological issues, the study found that al-Faruqi revitalized the classical position of ilm al-kalam in some respects, thus, presented it in a new dimension. It is observed that al-Faruqi's approach to Ilm al-Kalam is very intelligible to the modern mind and to a modern age. Therefore, this study acknowledged his vital contributions in the development of ilm al-kalam.

Its combined flexibility and accuracy is important to the real purpose of the waqf in its implementation. Its dynamics are first explored through its meaning and objectives as well as special features of waqf and cash waqf with special focus on the status of the endowed asset (mawqūf). The second part focuses on the critical evaluation of the current cash waqf practices in Malaysia. It is found that the special attention on the endowed asset ought to be maintained in order to preserve its original purpose. Waqf offers all kinds of assistance and is not confined to crisis management. Possessing the highest liquidity rate, cash waqf constitutes an important financial mechanism, especially given the current state of economic affairs. Its nature must be maintained, as suggested by those jurists who allow cash to be considered as an endowed asset (mawqūf)...

However, its discipline is not recognized in the modern world. This chapter aims at analyzing the challenges as well as prospects of reviving the role of ‘ilm al-akhlaq in meeting the current and future needs of man. The methods applied is critical analysis on available literatures on ethics, both classical and modern. The study came to the finding that this vital field in Islam faces serious challenges. Externally, the secular and atheist lines of thinking claim for their superiority as the most influential solution to the modern man’s problem. Internally, the discourse is typical of traditional approach, and therefore is not only unable to meet the modern needs, but also does not reflect the real meaning of akhlaq of the Qur’an. However, its prospects of being a modern discipline of knowledge and suitable for the modern society are very promising. It is indeed...

The issue of human will which is the most important and fundamental foundation to the concept of responsibility and morality is still open to discussion and debate. This paper aims at exploring the view of a reformer of Islam, Badiuzzaman Sa‘id Nursi in his 26th Word of his Risale-I Nur. Rather than having the discourse in a purely theological method, Nursi demonstrates it in a synthesis manner and suitable with modern man. The issue which is normally brought as juxtaposed with the concept of absolute will of God is dealt with in a harmonious way and suitable to all readers. Other than the phenomenological approach to the ontology of solving the relationship between God’s power and human will, Nursi also brought in very remarkable explanation about good and bad and how human should deal with them. Through-out his explanation, Nursi came w...

However, these challenges took on a more definite shape in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The challenges were complex and covered all facets of Muslim life. This paper tries to explore how Muslims can respond effectively to those challenges posed by modernity, and what are the main responses of modernity formulated over the past century. The response to the challenges of modernity, in fact, may be considered as one of the characteristics of Islam as a religion that has always shown a living awareness of contemporary intellectual issues. The study employs critical analysis of available sources and argues for additional scrutiny. Our position is supported by detailed scrutiny of early sectarian contributions to the development of Islamic thought. We discovered remarkable limitations in the tracing of the roots to the early firaq (sects) due to a strong reliance on secondary sources muddled in the complexities of dogmatic polemics. Nonetheless, relevant historiography improved our view of what actually happened when nascent Muslims confronted humorless political and social problems. Rather than producing extremist deviants, early Islamic thought was exceedingly dynamic and governed by a pressing need to defend sound Islamic principles. Early Muslims sought answers to perennial issues and did much to stimulate subsequent Muslim philosophy and thought. Indeed, any negative understandin...

This paper aims at critically analyzing the way in which modern Muslim scholars claim the legacy of the classical Mu‘tazilite school. It specifically offers a critical overview of the spirit and contents of both early Islamic movements. It is attempted to draw a more objective picture of the classical Mu‘tazilite school, based on their primary sources. The Indonesian Harun Nasution is taken as an example of a Neo-Mu‘tazilite scholar. This paper argues that the original Mu’tazilite spirit is not accurately represented by Harun Nasution. The Mu‘tazilite was the first theological school who tried to defend and preserve the original teachings of Islam in the face of the many challenges of their time. Today, the Mu‘tazilite school is often misrepresented by portraying it as a purely ratio...
