Why develop a digital replica of a building or a city? We wrapped up our Digital Horizons event series with a focus on digital twins and digital asset management – how these technologies can help us model climate solutions and spur decarbonisation but also explored the issues around energy they consume and the way people interact with them. It was a packed day of global discussion with examples from across the public and private sectors bringing tangible examples of how these technologies can bring meaningful impact: Patricio Reyes (Barcelona Supercomputing Center), Ilene Goldfine (Hines), Alexandra Luck (Department for Business and Trade), Dr Victor Khoo (Singapore Land Authority (SLA)), James Morgan (Department for Energy Security and Net Zero), Pascal Perez (Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network), and Rick Guo (Alibaba Group). The race to net zero, the climate crisis and the need to create a nature positive world are all pressing challenges the built environment is facing. Digital, data and emerging technologies can help confront these major issues. This was central to what was explored on our second Digital Horizons session. Our Nature-Climate Technical Sustainability Lead Clare Allen-Sader had an insightful discussion with Rémi Paccou 🌍 (Schneider Electric Research Institute), Annette Figueiredo (Greater London Authority), Melanie Colburn (US GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL), Craig Holland (The Nature Conservancy) and Brady Cline (Esri) discovering how their organisations and sectors are using digital approaches to mitigate challenges associated with climate change and nature loss. The Long Island Rail Road isn’t just a train service, but a lifeline for millions of regular passengers. So how do you modernise the busiest commuter line in the US? In The Arup Journal, we explore how the Long Island Rail Road Expansion Project has transformed a vital 9.8-mile stretch into a modern marvel, helping boost rail capacity by 40%. This means more frequent and robust services to Manhattan during peak periods. Learn more in The Arup Journal here: https://lnkd.in/dmFCz7vY #WeAreArup #ArupJournal #LIRR #Infrastructure

We have to be positive about AI’s potential to transform our built environment. We need AI by our side to be able to meet the major challenges we are facing. Our UKIMEA Data and AI Lead, Caro Ames, kicked off our Digital Horizons series discussing this critical topic with our guest speakers. Chaired by Sankar V S, Lewis Richards (Microsoft UK), Benson Lee (HKSAR), Magnus Cormack (ESO) and Jean Innes (The Alan Turing Institute) shed light on how AI is already solving complex challenges from city planning for better health to reconfiguring energy networks for renewables. And also, their take on the blockers to widespread AI adoption. Our Global Digital Services Lead, Will Cavendish shared how we are using AI and ML to create tangible benefits to the work we do in cities, infrastructure, property, energy, nature and beyond. Learning the lessons from Grenfell. The Grenfell Tower Inquiry made important recommendations for improvement across the built environment sector. Many of those key recommendations have already been implemented. But industry and government still has some way to go before we can say we have done everything needed to tackle the systemic issues, behaviours and practices required to minimize the risk of another Grenfell ever happening again. Our fire safety engineers and complex systems specialists have developed a change framework designed to address some of the systemic challenges identified by the Inquiry. We are publishing this change framework as part of our commitment to supporting the long-term action and accountability needed, across the sector, to create an effective and equitable fire safety system that works for everyone. The framework is for policymakers, supply chain partners, developers and others across the sector who share our commitment to causing change. The end of the Inquiry’s work must mark the beginning of a renewed long-term commitment to reshape industry culture and create an effective and equitable built environment in the UK and around the globe. “Cancer’s quite an emotive topic and its not often we get an opportunity to work on a project which I truly believe will impact the treatment of cancer going forward” says Adam Ellis, Associate at Arup in Manchester and lead mechanical designer on the Paterson Building. The Paterson Building represents the cutting edge of cancer research and development. The £150 million cancer research facility is a collaboration between The University of Manchester, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, and will house the largest concentration of scientists and clinicians in Europe. On behalf of Integrated Health Projects / VINCI and alongside partners BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd) and Dalkia UK, we have proudly led on the multi-disciplinary engineering design services to create a facility of global significance in cancer research. Can the UK develop a new model for delivering transformational infrastructure? Our Chief Officer for Business and Markets, Richard de Cani, explores this question on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme with Felicity Hannah. They discuss lessons from global approaches and the role the private sector can play in unlocking and accelerating economic growth. Richard's insights are drawn from a new report led by Arup, commissioned by the Mayors of Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, and supported by a consortium of private sector partners. The report proposes an innovative approach to the Midlands-North West Rail Link, aimed at creating a resilient passenger and freight rail network that delivers essential growth at a reduced cost.
