1700s: Costume & Fashion

Georgian period in Europe and Colonial period in America. 18th-century dress is renowned for its opulence. Fashions included elaborate wigs, rich embroidery and full skirts for women called the mantua. The 'sack back' or robe à la française dress (also called sacque, contouche, or robe battante) worn over a hoop petticoat, and the 'nightgown style' or style anglaise. A typical outfit for men included a knee-length coat, knee breeches, a vest or long waistcoat, and a linen shirt with frills.
