Kristoffer Føns on Instagram: "This tourist mistake in Edinburgh breaks my heart 🫣 The Scottish capital is, without a doubt, one of the best travel destinations in Europe, and I don’t think I’ve ever talked to anyone who has been to Edinburgh and didn’t fall a wee bit in love with the city 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 But Edinburgh is so much more than what you see in 99% of the posts on social media. I know, I know - the Dean Village is not a super-duper hidden gem that nobody knows about, but it’s still outside of the Old Town, and if you walk the route, I suggest you’ll experience a totally different side of Edinburgh compared to what you get over in the main tourist area ✌️ #edinburgh #traveltips #scotlandtravel"

Loida Garcia on Instagram: "During our stay at @kilmartincastle , we decided to visit the nearby graveyard to see the medieval grave slabs. As I walked into the small outdoor enclosure, I was struck by the sight of these old stones, each one worn by time and weather. Some slabs date back to the 12th century and are intricately carved with symbols and figures, telling the stories of the people buried there. I touched the carvings and thought about the knights and families represented—real people who once lived here, sharing this land. Kilmartin, located in Argyll, is surrounded by stunning landscapes and rich history, with ancient burial sites and stone circles scattered throughout the area. The nearby Kilmartin Museum showcases even more about the area’s past, including artifacts from th
Andrew McAlindon on Instagram: "It’s been nearly a year since my last visit to the Isle of Lewis, which is one of my favourite places in Scotland. The Callanish Standing Stones are an extraordinary collection of ancient monoliths, erected an estimated 5,000 years ago. They predate Stonehenge and were an important place for ritual activity for at least 2,000 years. Patrick Ashmore is a former Principal Inspector of Ancient Monuments with Historic Scotland, now Historic Environment Scotland. His report ‘Calanais Survey and Excavation 1979-88’ recounts the details of a series of important excavations at the site during the 1980s and provides, for the first time, comprehensive detail and analysis of these important excavations, making a wealth of material available for archaeologists and

Old London & Old England 🇬🇧 on Instagram: "In the Outer Hebrides, a chain of islands off the west coast of Scotland, the tradition of making Harris Tweed has a long and storied history. Highland women, along with men, played a crucial role in this industry. Women were deeply involved in the entire process of producing tweed, from shearing the sheep, washing and carding the wool, to spinning the yarn and weaving the cloth. They worked tirelessly in small, often dimly-lit cottages, using traditional hand looms to weave the wool into the durable fabric that Harris Tweed is known for. The work was physically demanding, requiring great skill and patience. The women would typically gather in small groups, working together while exchanging stories and maintaining a strong sense of community.
Simply Scotland on Instagram: "The Shetland Islands are a group of about 100 islands, 130 miles north of the Scottish mainland. Among those inhabited include Lerwick, the islands’ largest town, and Scalloway. 📽️: @shetlandruthie More than 5,000 archaeological sites across Shetland hint at a long history, with evidence of human activity here as far back as 4,320BC. Between 150 and 200AD, brochs were built near the sea across Shetland – hollow stone roundhouses that may have been defensive fortresses. In the ninth century, Shetland was colonised by the Vikings, the start of a long Norse and Scandinavian influence, even after the islands passed to Scotland in the 14th century. Today, the Norse influence can be felt not just in Viking sites like the famous Jarlshof settlement, but in its p
