Achmad Kholili is a faculty member at the University of Islam Zainul Hasan Genggong, Indonesia. He gained his bachelor's degree of English Education at the University of Muhammadiyah Jember. He subsequently obtained his master's degree in English Language Teaching at the University of Islam Malang. Lately, he has published his papers in a number of national and international journals, such as The Journal of Asia TEFL (a Q1 Scopus-indexed journal), VELES: Voices of English Language Education Society, ELT Forum: Journal of English Language Teaching, Lingual: Journal of Language and Culture, Journal of Research on English and Language Learning, Journal of English Teaching and Learning, and International Journal of Research in English Education. Understanding non-English Major’s Students’ Motivation in Learning English via Photovoice: Insights from Tertiary EFL Students

Despite various studies on the motivation in the ELT context, there is a lack of study that cente... more Despite various studies on the motivation in the ELT context, there is a lack of study that centers on the learners' motivation of non-English majors through photovoice research. The current study attempts to fill this gap. This study was conducted in a private university in Indonesia, involving five non-English major students. A photovoice study was utilized so as to capture and understand their learning motivation. It was found that the photographs the students took illustrated that the students have now been learning English in much more critical ways. Various reasons for their learning English include the ideas that English is a beautiful and a useful language. They also perceived that learning English can help us get a better job; traveling is much easier with a good knowledge of English; and having knowledge of English can help you study abroad. They perceived that they should study English harder to achieve such goals. The findings also show that they belong to non-English majors. Suggestions for future studies are also offered in this paper.

The current study examines how the discussion in an online academic writing for publication group promotes reflective thinking. This study involved two EFL teachers who participated and learned academic writing in a weekly online meeting on WhatsApp to reflect on their study. Hence, performing acts through speech are commonly committed by people currently; it is no exception for the EFL students. Some linguists assert that learning communicative competence is of great importance in communication including the act of speaking in the social context. This study was carried out to investigate the students' acquaintances with speech act. A survey was conducted in this study so as to know their acquaintances with speech act. This study focused on the divisions of speech act including locutionary act, illocutionary act, perlocutionary act, and direct and indirect speech act. The data resource was the sixth semester students of class B at University of Islam Malang majoring in English Education Program. A questionnaire was distributed to know if they have an acquaintance with the speech act. The data was analyzed with descriptive statistics after being collected. The findings revealed that the students still committed errors towards the speech act competence. They, a considerable part, did not know parts of speech act which is salient to recognize. For this reason, the researcher expects that the students will be capable of recognizing more on speech act by learning either from this paper or from other resources regarding speech act learning.

Moreover, the speaking material in the existing book that used by school are too limited in scope of speaking. Tenses, Voices, and Moves in the ELT Research Abstracts: A Corpus-based Study

In writing a research paper, the writers will, of course, include a concise report or the socalle... more In writing a research paper, the writers will, of course, include a concise report or the socalled abstract to pass on information to the readers concerning their studies. The problems not only arise in presenting an idea in reporting the study but also have trouble using grammatical structures and patterns established in the abstract they write. To this effect, this study was conducted to investigate elements used in the abstracts of ELT Journal. The aim of this study was to provide the researchers with the proper guideline in writing abstracts appropriately. The twelve journals ranging from 2015 to 2018 publications were selected to analyze with respect to tenses, voices, and move structures employed in the abstracts. Swales & Feak's (2004) move structures were adopted in this study so as to analyze the moves in the abstracts. The findings of the study show variations with regard to tenses, moves, and voices used in the abstracts. In tenses, introduction and results of the study employed present tense, whereas past tense was frequently used in aims, methods, and results. In the meantime, in terms of voice, four moves showed active voices in the abstracts including Move 1, Move 2, Move 4, and Move 5 in spite of the fact that Move 3 used passive voice. Furthermore, the rhetorical move following Swales & Feak's (2004) only certifies 8.3 %. In other words, only 1 article abstract followed it, whereas others demonstrated variation in moves. This finding makes a substantial contribution to the writers, especially for the novice writers in an ELT research context.

One Indonesian EFL learner from a private University shared his experiences of the power of using Proofreader for accomplishing his tasks and for improving his writing proficiency. Written reflection and semi-structured interview were held by the researchers with the research participant. The results indicated that the EFL learner felt way more improved in their writing after using the application for learning English writing. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERACTIVE APPROACH IN IMPROVING SECOND GRADE STUDENTS' READING COMPREHENSION

In fact, reading is practiced by people in their daily life, including the students as well. The ... more In fact, reading is practiced by people in their daily life, including the students as well. The practice may happen on some occasion. However, there are several factors influencing readers' understanding in reading, the factors include linguistic factors, background knowledge, micro reading skill, and reading strategies. Since the factors involve linguistics and background knowledge, it is closely related to bottom up and top down theory of reading. The current theory reveals that a combination of top down and bottom up processing in reading is effective in improving reading comprehension. Hence, this study attempts to investigate the effectiveness of the interactive approach in improving reading comprehension. A quasi-experimental design was employed in this study. 60-second grade female students at MAN 1 Situbondo, including 30 students for experimental group and 30 students for the control group were recruited as the sample of the study. The two groups were taken out since they were homogeneous and of the equivalent level in reading achievement. A multiple choice test was administered in this study involving pretest and posttest. The data was then analyzed using independent sample t-test. The result demonstrates that there is a significant difference between the students taught with the interactive approach and those taught with the traditional one. The hypothesis testing reveals that the sig. value is 0.000. It means that the score is lower than 0.05. To this end, the interactive approach is more effective than the conventional method of improving students' reading comprehension.

Aspect of English including grammar and vocabulary becomes integral parts of being good, correct writing. As the name suggests, grammar plays a pivotal role in writing. When a writer starts to write, the complexity of the grammar arises. Let alone, the vocabulary constitutes an inseparable part in writing. EFL students often do not have many vocabularies to reveal. This study was undertaken to know the students' exposure to writing English. A descriptive qualitative research was employed in this study so as to look into their writing experience. The participants of this study were taken out with snowball sampling. The semi-structured interview was held to gain their experiences of writing English. The observation was also done in consent with aspects being studied in this research. The data was analyzed with Miles and Huberman's techniques comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result indicates that the students perceive that writing English is very complex; they, for the most part, give negative statement towards writing English. It was on the students' responses that aspects of writing namely grammar and vocabulary are quite hard to do. In addition, the students have trouble writing English due to lack of practice. As a result, itaffects their writing achievement in their school. The students, in this case,do not have good character. The students most of all are not highly motivated in learning English.

The problems not only arise in presenting an idea in reporting the study but also have trouble using grammatical structures and patterns established in the abstract they write. To this effect, this study was conducted to investigate elements used in the abstracts of ELT Journal. The aim of this study was to provide the researchers with the proper guideline in writing abstracts appropriately. The twelve journals ranging from 2015 to 2018 publications were selected to analyze with respect to tenses, voices, and move structures employed in the abstracts. Swales & Feak's (2004) move structures were adopted in this study so as to analyze the moves in the abstracts. The findings of the study show variations with regard to tenses, moves, and voices used in the abstracts. In tenses, introduction and results of the study employed present tense, whereas past tense was frequently used in aims, methods, and results. In the meantime, in terms of voice, four moves showed active voices in the abstracts including Move 1, Move 2, Move 4, and Move 5 in spite of the fact that Move 3 used passive voice. Furthermore, the rhetorical move following Swales & Feak's (2004) only certifies 8.3 %. In other words, only 1 article abstract followed it, whereas others demonstrated variation in moves. This finding makes a substantial contribution to the writers, especially for the novice writers in an ELT research context.

One Indonesian EFL learner from a private University shared his experiences of the power of using Proofreader for accomplishing his tasks and for improving his writing proficiency. Written reflection and semi-structured interview were held by the researchers with the research participant. The results indicated that the EFL learner felt way more improved in their writing after using the application for learning English writing. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERACTIVE APPROACH IN IMPROVING SECOND GRADE STUDENTS' READING COMPREHENSION

The practice may happen on some occasion. However, there are several factors influencing readers' understanding in reading, the factors include linguistic factors, background knowledge, micro reading skill, and reading strategies. Since the factors involve linguistics and background knowledge, it is closely related to bottom up and top down theory of reading. The current theory reveals that a combination of top down and bottom up processing in reading is effective in improving reading comprehension. Hence, this study attempts to investigate the effectiveness of the interactive approach in improving reading comprehension. A quasi-experimental design was employed in this study. 60-second grade female students at MAN 1 Situbondo, including 30 students for experimental group and 30 students for the control group were recruited as the sample of the study. The two groups were taken out since they were homogeneous and of the equivalent level in reading achievement. A multiple choice test was administered in this study involving pretest and posttest. The data was then analyzed using independent sample t-test. The result demonstrates that there is a significant difference between the students taught with the interactive approach and those taught with the traditional one. The hypothesis testing reveals that the sig. value is 0.000. It means that the score is lower than 0.05. To this end, the interactive approach is more effective than the conventional method of improving students' reading comprehension.

Aspect of English including grammar and vocabulary becomes integral parts of being good, correct writing. As the name suggests, grammar plays a pivotal role in writing. When a writer starts to write, the complexity of the grammar arises. Let alone, the vocabulary constitutes an inseparable part in writing. EFL students often do not have many vocabularies to reveal. This study was undertaken to know the students' exposure to writing English. A descriptive qualitative research was employed in this study so as to look into their writing experience. The participants of this study were taken out with snowball sampling. The semi-structured interview was held to gain their experiences of writing English. The observation was also done in consent with aspects being studied in this research. The data was analyzed with Miles and Huberman's techniques comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result indicates that the students perceive that writing English is very complex; they, for the most part, give negative statement towards writing English. It was on the students' responses that aspects of writing namely grammar and vocabulary are quite hard to do. In addition, the students have trouble writing English due to lack of practice. As a result, itaffects their writing achievement in their school. The students, in this case,do not have good character. The students most of all are not highly motivated in learning English.

English is known as crucial and salient to learn. The language quite reveals complexities that make some people sometimes give in to continue studying it. It has such as grammar, linguistic terms, and other rules that play a very significant role while applied to daily life. One of the rules that are quite hard to do is combining words within a sentence called as collocation. This paper aims at investigating whether the students at University of Islam Malang have known about collocation. In this study, the researcher conducted a quick survey. The data was collected with an open-questionnaire containing five different sentences in which the students should translate the Indonesian sentence into English correctly using a correct combination of words. The result of the study revealed that the students from University of Islam Malang still have been committing errors in combining words in a sentence; it is due to their little acquaintance with collocation even having no knowledge of it. Since it has happened to the students, by conducting this small research, the researcher expects that the students may learn much more about collocation either from this paper or other resources with regards to collocation learning in English.
