Along with many known risk factors, infection of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has been associated with the development of oral cancer and is suggested to modulate host cell transcription. Reciprocally, cellular transcription factors, such as NF-kappaB and AP-1 are known to modulate the expression of viral and other genes involved in the development of cancer. In the absence of data on NF-kappaB in relation to HPV in oral cancer, we studied the DNA binding activity and expression pattern of NF-kappaB family of proteins in different stages of oral cancer and correlated with HPV infection that has been associated with better prognosis of the disease. A total of 110 fresh oral tissue biopsies were collected comprising 10 normal controls, 34 precancer and 66 oral cancer lesions prior to chemotherapy/radiotherapy. Diagnosis of HPV was done by both consensus...

The possibility that carcinogenesis may originate in a stem cell process was proposed recently. Stem cells are generated and contribute to tumor formation during the process of tumor development. This chapter focuses on the role of epigenetics and genetics in stem cell formation, different theories about the origin of cancer stem cells (CSCs), and epigenetic mechanisms that occur in solid CSCs. Potential applications of knowledge gained through this field and future prospects for cancer treatment also are discussed.

Minimum inhibitory concentration values were compared with control and zone of inhibition values were compared with standard ciprofloxacin in concentration 100 and 200 mug/ml. The results revealed that, the ethanol extract is potent in inhibiting bacterial growth of both Gram-negative and Gram positive bacteria.

I... more The tumor suppressor p53 is one of the most complex and widely studied genes in cancer biology. In spite of the vast on literature the transcriptional regulation of p53, aspects of its especially epigenetic regulation are not completely understood. This chapter presents a concise overview of p53-related epigenetic events involved in oncogenesis and tumor suppression. We limit the scope to epigenetic modifications of the p53 promoter per se as well as its well-established downstream targets. The indirect role of p53 affecting the epigenetic machinery of cancer cells via specific proteins and transcription factors is discussed. Current concepts of p53-related cancer epigenetics offer myriad avenues for cancer therapies. Challenges in the field are also discussed.

Inquiries revealed that 39 people from 14 families went to the forest in Panna district (MP) for collection of mahua (for making liquor), among which two had died. Examination of 37 migrants revealed 84% Plasmodium falciparum infection and the death of one migrant. Investigation on the site of occupational activities of these migrants in Panna revealed 77% P. falciparum in rapid fever surveys. The epidemiological role of migrants in the dissemination, maintenance and enhancement of malaria transmission is discussed in this study.

Ethical issues related to information systems are important to the information technology (IT) pr... more Ethical issues related to information systems are important to the information technology (IT) professionals. These issues are also significant for organizations and societies. Although considerable literature on IT and related ethical issues exists, a review of this literature has found little empirical research on ethical practices within the government and private sector organizations. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to draw inferences regarding such practices currently in these sectors. The research results indicate a significant correlation between the code of ethics and the attitude of professionals towards the unethical use of software in government and private sector organizations. These also indicate significant differences in government and private sectors.

Biological oxygen demand and dissolved oxygen values were well above the permissible limit at all sites, and were recorded as being at maximum at Dinapur sewage treatment plant. Heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Cr) in disposed effluents were above permissible limits at all three sites. Likewise, the most probable number index of E. coli in water samples and coliform counts were recorded as being higher in irrigated water samples and vegetables, indicating a serious health hazard posed by intense microbial and faecal pollution. It was recommended that an integrated approach of phytoremediation with aquatic macrophytes and ozonization of wastewater be adopted to curb the heavy metals and microbial pollution based on these recent research investigations.

The incubation of the follicles with cAMP or cAMP-elevating drugs [phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors], such as IBMX (3-isobutyl-1-methyl-xanthine), theophylline and caffeine, inhibited the 2-OHE2-induced GVBD in a concentration-dependent manner. The magnitude of the response varied: both cAMP and IBMX were effective at all concentrations (0.1-2.0 mmol l(-1)), followed by theophylline (0.5-2.0 mmol l(-1)) and caffeine (1-2.0 mmol l(-1)). The protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor H89 stimulated oocyte maturation in a concentration-dependent manner. However, when co-incubated with 2-OHE2 for 24 h it produced a biphasic effect: low concentrations (0.1 and 1.0 micromol l(-1)) did not alter the 2-OHE2-induced GVBD, but high concentrations (5 and 10 micromol l(-1)) inhibited it. The incubation of the follicles with H89 lowered the inhibitory effect of IBMX on the 2-OHE2-induced GVBD. The incubation of the follicles with okadaic acid (OA), a protein phosphatase 1 and 2A inhibitor did not affect GVBD but when co-incubated with 2-OHE2, it enhanced the GVBD response. OA reversed the inhibitory effect of IBMX. The results suggest that OA may overcome the inhibition of 2-OHE2-induced GVBD by IBMX at a step distal to the cAMP-PKA pathway.

The aims of our study were to prospectively assess the efficacy of propranolol as a first line treatment for problematic haemangioma, and develop a treatment regime. 31 consecutive patients with rapidly proliferating infantile haemangioma with functional impairment or cosmetic disfigurement were treated with propranolol as a first line treatment. All patients had cardiovascular pre-treatment work-up and commenced on propranolol at 3 mg/kg/day. A rapid halt in haemangioma proliferation was seen in 100% of patients and significant regression in 87% of patients. This treatment is well tolerated and has little side effects. Since this study, our unit has adopted the policy of using propranolol as a first line treatment for all problematic proliferative infantile haemangiomas.

During a 4-year period, 101 fingers in 43 patients had this deformity corrected using a new procedure combining the distally based extensor lateral band technique described by Littler and the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS)-palmar plate pulley introduced by Zancolli. The ranges of motion of the metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal (PIP) and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints were assessed pre-operatively and 12 months after surgery. An average PIP joint hyperextension of -13.3 degrees was converted to +13.4 degrees . The ranges of motion of the proximal and DIP joints were significantly different (Student's t-test). No patient suffered recurrence of the deformity during an average follow-up of 20 months. This new technique improves some unappealing aspects of previous techniques and provides a stable and reliable correction of swan neck deformity.
