Recently was described a role of vascular endothelial growth factor in the interstitial fibrotic processes. Case presentation: A 13-year-old female presented with pain, swelling and limitation of movements in right forearm. An osteolytic lesion at the distal end of the right radius was shown, with pathologic concentration of Technetium 99 and slight enhancement of soft tissue lesion employing computerized axial tomography. The surgical biopsy showed nodular formations of hyalinized collagen fibers arranged in thick bands with few well-differentiated interstitial fibroblasts / myofibroblasts, focally expressing VEGF-A. Conclusion: The intramedullary neoplastic proliferation is limited by the cortical bone, provoking compression of the intratumorally micro-vessels, favoring both, the extracellular matrix and VEGF-A synthesis. Future research should include therapeutic intervention wit...

Material and methods: 240 patients with DIPD were included in the study, with an average age of 56 years. The mtLSU rRNA gene of PnJ was studied by means of nested PCR. The PCR was positive in 32% (78 patients). Results Only tobacco use showed a significant association with the evidence of colonization. Leucocytosis and eosinophilia are parameters related to this phenomenon also. Radiologically, there were no distinctive findings in high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) nor difference between both sub-groups (PCR+ versus PCR-) in the distribution of the most frequent pathologies in our area: idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia and connective tissue diseases. Also, no significant differences were observed in...

Changes in cell plaque composition are fundamental events inside the plaque microenvironment that are strictly related to the clinical outcome of these lesions (organ damage). The knowledge of these modifications may help to better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of atherosclerosis. We report on a flow cytometry method to characterize and quantify the cell subpopulations in human atherosclerotic plaques. Cells were obtained from endarterectomy specimens after collagenase digestion. Both surface and intracytoplasmic antigens were labeled. Our data demonstrated that the method we described allowed the characterization of cell populations that compose the atherosclerotic plaque, avoiding contamination by tunica media smooth muscle cells and the noise of cellular debris. Moreover this validation study showed that about 50% of cells in the atherosclerotic plaques are inflammatory mononuclear cells (T lymphocytes and monocytes/macrophages). Reproducible quantitative methods for cell population characterization may increase the understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for plaque progression. The methodology herein described gave us the possibility of quickly calculating the relative amount of each cell population and studying both surface and intracellular markers to analyze the functional stage of the cells. The clinical correlation was not assessed in the present study, because we used a small patient group to validate the method, but should be the subject of further analyses in a larger patient population.
