Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have are known to enhance the activity of compounds when used as ... more Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have are known to enhance the activity of compounds when used as drug carriers due to their ability to cross the cell membrane, allowing for controlled and selective release. In this study, the effect of BNZ@Zn-MOFs on the acute phase of infection was evaluated in a mouse model. The particles were obtained by electroelution (EL), doped with BZN by mechanochemistry and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). BNZ@Zn-MOF released 80% of the BZN after 3 h. No cytotoxicity was observed in NIH-3T3 and HeLa cells. Antiparasitic activity was observed in a model of acute experimental infection in BALB/c mice, using a dose 250 times lower than that required for free BZN. PCR analysis showed no parasite DNA in the tissues of treated mice. Hematoxylin-eosin staining revealed no apparent damage to tissue architecture. Serum levels of liver function enzymes remained unchanged. The use of suboptimal doses of BZN in this delivery system allows the maintenance of drug activity and may facilitate a signi cant reduction in the side effects caused by drug administration in the treatment of Chagas disease.

During pregnancy the human fetus receives timed cues from the circadian rhythms of temperature, m... more During pregnancy the human fetus receives timed cues from the circadian rhythms of temperature, metabolites, and hormones from the mother. This influence is interrupted after parturition, the infant does not secrete melatonin and their circadian rhythms are still immature. However, evolution provided the solution to this problem. The newborn can continue receiving the mother's timed cues through breastmilk. Colostrum, transitional, and mature human milk are extraordinary complex biofluids that besides nutrients, contain an array of other non-nutritive components. Upon birth the first milk, colostrum, is rich in bioactive, immunological factors, and in complex oligosaccharides which help the proper establishment of the microbiome in the gut, which is crucial for the infants' health. Hormones, such as glucocorticoids and melatonin, transfer from the mother's plasma to milk, and then the infant is exposed to circadian cues from their mother. Also, milk components of fat, proteins, amino acids, and endogenous cannabinoids, among others, have a markedly different concentration between day and night. In the present review, we give an overview of nutritive and non-nutritive components and their daily rhythms in human milk and explore their physiological importance for the infant. Finally, we highlight some interventions with a circadian approach that emphasize the importance of circadian rhythms in the newborn for their survival, proper growth, and development. It is estimated that ∼600,000 deaths/year are due to suboptimal breastfeeding. It is advisable to increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding, during the day and night, as was established by the evolution of our species.

En el presente trabajo se obtuvieron cinco derivados de 2-aminotiazol con diferentes sustituyente... more En el presente trabajo se obtuvieron cinco derivados de 2-aminotiazol con diferentes sustituyentes con la finalidad de obtener diversidad química la cual es muy importante en química medicinal para estudiar en un futuro la potencialización o modificación de la actividad biológica en el farmacóforo. Para la obtención de estos derivados primero se sintetizó el 2-aminotiazol-4-carboxilato de etilo, por condensación de bromopiruvato de etilo y tiourea mediante síntesis de Hantzsch. Posteriormente, en el grupo amino libre se realizó la acilación con cinco halogenuros de ácido a los cuales se les determinó su punto de fusión y solubilidad. Asimismo, todos los compuestos fueron caracterizados mediante métodos espectroscópicos como IR y RMN.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in pregnancy is associated with birth and developmental alterations i... more Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in pregnancy is associated with birth and developmental alterations in infants. In this study, clinical records of 47 infants whose mothers had Zika during pregnancy or clinical manifestations compatible with Zika were reviewed. A description of the infants’ anomalies was established, and a neurodevelopmental assessment was performed on 18 infants, using the Evaluation of Infant Development (EDI for its initialism in Spanish) and DDST-II (Denver Developmental Screening Test II) tests. From his sample, 74.5% of the infants evaluated had major anomalies and 51.9% had minor anomalies. The incidence of major anomalies, related to trimester of pregnancy, was 84.2% for the first trimester, 77.8% for the second trimester, and 37.5% in the third trimester. A similar trend was observed in the frequency of infants without anomalies and was less evident in the incidence of minor anomalies (p = 0.016). We compared age-related seroprevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection with history of vector cont... more We compared age-related seroprevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection with history of vector control interventions and social and ecological changes in three historically endemic departments of Cordoba province, Argentina, covering an area of 42,600 km(2) of the Gran Chaco region. Using a cross sectional design, blood samples of 5240 people between 6 months and 40 years of age, living in 192 rural communities were analyzed to detect T. cruzi infection using ELISA tests, and confirmed with indirect immunofluorescent antibody test and indirect haemoagglutination. Overall seroprevalence was 5.4%, 7.9% and 7.5% in the north, northwest and west studied areas (average for all areas 6.95%). Seroprevalence for T cruzi increased with population age, especially in age classes older than 15 years of age. Communities of the north and west areas showed 0.59% seroprevalence for T. cruzi in children below 15 years of age, whereas children of the same age in the northwest region showed a seroprevalence of 3.08%. Comparative analyses indicate that vector control activities and land use changes during the last decades are the most likely causes of the overall reduction of T. cruzi prevalence. Results suggest that the vectorial transmission of T. cruzi has been strongly reduced and probably interrupted in the north and west areas, but it is still active in the northwestern rural settlements of Córdoba province.

The implementation of sustainable control strategies aimed at disrupting the transmission of vect... more The implementation of sustainable control strategies aimed at disrupting the transmission of vector-borne pathogens requires a comprehensive knowledge of the vector ecology in the different eco-epidemiological contexts, as well as the local pathogen transmission cycles and their dynamics. However, even when focusing only on one specific vector-borne disease, achieving this knowledge is highly challenging, as the pathogen may exhibit a high genetic diversity and multiple vector species or subspecies and host species may be involved. In addition, the development of the pathogen and the vectorial capacity of the vectors may be affected by their midgut and/or salivary gland microbiome. The recent advent of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies has brought powerful tools that can allow for the simultaneous identification of all these essential components, although their potential is only just starting to be realized. We present a metabarcoding approach that can facilitate the description of comprehensive host-pathogen networks, integrate important microbiome and coinfection data, identify at-risk situations, and disentangle the transmission cycles of vector-borne pathogens. This powerful approach should be generalized to unravel the transmission cycles of any pathogen and their dynamics, which in turn will help the design and implementation of sustainable, effective, and locally adapted control strategies.

A serological study was conducted on two howler monkey species (Alouatta pigra and A. palliata) from the Mexican states of Campeche and Tabasco. Dengue is one of the major public health concerns in the world. Since all the four serotypes are actively circulating in Mexico, there is a need to develop an efficient diagnosis system to improve case management of the patients. There exist few studies evaluating the use of the NS3 protein as a protective antigen against dengue virus (DENV). In this paper we show the expression of a recombinant NS3 protein from all serotypes of dengue virus (GST-DVNS3-1-4) and report a reliable “in-house detection system ” for the diagnosis of dengue infection which was field-tested in a small village (Tezonapa) in the state of Veracruz, Mexico.
