Abstract.-A classification of inference systems based on approximate reasoning techniques is proposed. An alternative realization method is described for the particular SISC case, which enables reducing the silicon area and increasing the operation speed, making it especially appropriate for real time control applications.

However, the configuration and tuning of this kind of system represents a problem, although the modelling of the expert knowledge seems easy. Incoherences, non-completeness or control action inconsistencies may appear when the formulation

The performance of this decoding is close to the performance of turbo-decoding

The activities of the different radium isotopes in waters and hence their radiotoxicities strongl... more The activities of the different radium isotopes in waters and hence their radiotoxicities strongly depend on to which natural radioactive series they belong and on the chemical behaviour of certain of their radioactive predecessors. We have therefore developed a method to simultaneously determine 22V224 ' 2M,228 Ra activities in freshwater. The radium content is selectively extracted from two aliquots into which we divide each water sample for analysis, with an interval of at least 3 days between the two separations. The 228 Ra activity and chemical yields are determined by gamma-spectrometric analysis of the precipitate. Alpha-spectrometric analysis of either of the two precipitates allows us to determine the activity of 226 Ra directly. The 22V224 Ra activities are indirectly obtained from two reasonably acceptable hypotheses: first, that the integrals of 222 Rn, 220 Rn and 2,9 Rn alpha-emissions are the same as their respective daughters; second, that 22, Ra is in secular equilibrium with all its daughters. The proposed procedure gives detection limits around 0.1 mBq/1 for the alpha-emitting isotopes of Ra, and therefore permits the detection of net activity levels in a large fraction of the freshwater samples analyzed.

F... more Stability methods for discrete fuzzy systems based on Lyapunov stability theorem are discussed. First, we represent the fuzzy system by a Takagi-Sugeno model and we recall its stability conditions. Second, we analyze the difficulties encountered in finding a general solution for stability of such systems, and then, we study the effect of the membership functions and the dependence of the basin of attraction on the type of such functions. The methods are illustrated by examples

This architecture allows the integrated operation of several control layers, ranging from direct PID-based control to model based intelligent control. The architecture is organized following the principle of increasing precision with decreasing intelligence, but has a integration schema based on a multiresolutional model of the process. This is a distributed architecture based on a ...

The main tdjective is to obtain an improved performance of this non-linear system. It is aimed to control levcl set point by adjusting the llowrate of a liquid entering thc tank. Both the FC and the system are represented

Therefore, the effects of the Inter-Symbol-Interference and Multiple-Access-Interference that appears in CDMA and multi-sensor systems are mitigated. Conventionally, the detection of these sequences has been achieved by means of straightforward matched-filter correlators. In this paper, a new correlator which significantly reduces the total number of operations to be performed is proposed, allowing real-time operation.

We present some results obtained and comments about the work under development. The most active issues in these days are the specification of an intelligent control system design methodology based on a task-technology map and the integration of specific technologies to obtain synergistic effects. ...

Our rationally designed model peptide is surface-active only as an R-helix. We apply circular dichroism to show that the folded population can be controlled with changes in electrolyte concentration, and we apply pendant bubble tensiometry to explore dynamic surfactant activity. This study shows a peptide that responds to environmental stimuli with dynamic folding and surface activity. Extending this concept to selective binding peptides will lead to new tools, where dynamic surface activity is coupled to targeted binding.

A fuzzy control algorithm does not go further than a non-linear function described by its inference map. Firstly, it is possible to obtain the inference map corresponding to a classical PID controller by choosing adequately the linguistic terms, the membership functions and the table of rules. Then the inverse problem is presented: to obtain the closer PID to a given fuzzy controller. From these ideas, the paper focuses its attention on the obtainment of a useful tool to design fuzzy controllers at least as good as the PID that allows the system to follow a specified behaviour. The next step is to improve the fuzzy controller parameters. Finally, an industrial application of these ideas is shown. The design of a fuzzy controller over a clinker cooler with grill, improving P and PI controllers already functioning, is discussed.
