The lumbricid earthworms Eisenia andrei (Ea) and E. fetida (Ef) have been used as model organisms... more The lumbricid earthworms Eisenia andrei (Ea) and E. fetida (Ef) have been used as model organisms for studies on hybridization. Previously they have been identified by species specific sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene of maternal origin (‘a’ or ‘f’) and the nuclear 28S gene of maternal/paternal origin (‘A’ or ‘F’). In experimental crosses, these hermaphroditic species produce progeny of genotypes Ea (aAA), Ef (fFF) and hybrids (aAF and fFA) originating by self-fertilization or cross-fertilization. To facilitate studies on new aspects of the breeding biology and hybridization of earthworms, polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed based on 12 Ea and 12 Ef specimens and validated on DNA samples extracted from 24 genotyped specimens (aAA, fFF, aAF and fFA) from three laboratory-raised families and 10 of them were applied in the present study. The results indicate that microsatellite markers are valuable tools for tracking interspecific gene flow between these species.

Eisenia andrei/fetida complex of lumbricid earthworms contains E. andrei (Ea) and two mitochondri... more Eisenia andrei/fetida complex of lumbricid earthworms contains E. andrei (Ea) and two mitochondrial lineages of E. fetida (Ef), referred to as Ef1 and Ef2. These earthworms are hermaphrodites capable of self-fertilization and hybridization as evidenced in laboratory mated earthworms from Ea and Ef1 lineage of Ef. The aim of the present investigations was to compare reproductive performance of Ea and Ef2 lineage from French laboratory stocks reared for a decade in Polish laboratories. These were cultured either in isolation and/or in intra-specific or inter-specific pairs for up to 57 weeks from hatching. Parental specimens and offspring were identified by species/lineage-specific sequences of the haploid mitochondrial COI gene, either 'a' or 'f2', and species-specific sequences of the nuclear 28s rRNA gene, either 'AA' or 'FF', thus delimitated as aAA or f2FF for Ea or Ef2, respectively, or aAF for hybrids. Experiments conducted on salmonid fish gave indirect evidence of the presence of adrenergic and c... more Experiments conducted on salmonid fish gave indirect evidence of the presence of adrenergic and cholinergic receptors on fish leukocytes, since they demonstrated the enhancing effect of chemical sympathectomy on humoral response in vivo and the differential effects of adrenergic and cholinergic agonists on the antibody response and oxidative burst in vitro. We have extended these observations on cyprinid fish by detection of the modulatory effects of some of these drugs on the PMA-induced oxidative burst of head kidney leukocytes of the wild goldfish, Carassius auratus. Moreover, we have directly demonstrated the presence of adrenergic and cholinergic receptors on goldfish leukocytes. The adult common toads Bufo bufo, soon after arousal from winter hibernation, were field-collected in the early spring and kept either in outdoor enclosure (mimicking the natural environment of this species) or in the laboratory at room temperature 22_C. Individuals kept in the laboratory were either fed ad libitum or starved. Their gastrointestinal tracts were treated with acetic acid which removes gut epithelium and exposes underlying structures facilitating macroscopic visualization and counting of GALT nodules. The number of GALT nodules in animals collected from natural conditions was negligible after winter hibernation, increased in the spring, reached the highest level in the summer and declined in the autumn. The allergen particles released from the grains are often well distributed in the air. Due to their size, airborne protein particles can easily penetrate into the lower parts of the respiratory airways and may lead to symptoms of asthma. The purpose of this paper was to quantify both Betula sp. pollen grains and allergens in the air. Materials for the investigation were collected in the spring of 2003 with two Hirst-type pollen volumetric traps. Tapes from one trap served for routine birch pollen grain counts, while those from the second for the immunodetection of birch allergens. As birch pollen allergen concentration is seen as dark spots on X-ray films densitometric measurements of the spots were used to quantify birch-pollen antigen concentrations in the air. Newly metamorphosed froglets of the edible frog Rana esculenta, i.e., interspecific hybrids of R.... more Newly metamorphosed froglets of the edible frog Rana esculenta, i.e., interspecific hybrids of R. ridibunda and R. lessonae, were collected in the field. In the laboratory some of them were fed ad libitum while others were malnourished. After three weeks, each froglet received four skin grafts from four adult donors: R. esculenta, R. ridibunda, R. temporaria and Bombina variegata. Malnutrition impaired transplantation immunity to xenogeneic grafts but not to allogeneic and semixenogeneic ones. Seven weeks of nutritional deficiency caused involution of lymphoid organs, mainly thymuses, but also subcutaneous lymphoid bodies and spleens, as well as significant depletion of peritonealleukocytes.
