Following the end of WWII, the victor nations sought to create institutions that would eliminate ... more Following the end of WWII, the victor nations sought to create institutions that would eliminate the economic causes of war by establishing economic institutions. One was the International Trade Organization, which upon collapse, birthed the general agreement on tariffs and trade, a provisional international agreement that set out the rules for conducting international trade, and as an informal structure to administer the agreement. This provisional body was made permanent and formal in 1994 and christened the World Trade Organization, incorporating the objectives of the GATT and adding an environmental component. States that are party to the GATT and WTO pursued the objectives in various ways and this paper argues that in the end, it is the developing nations that lose in a system that seems rigged to their disfavor.
