Dalits of Telugu-speaking region of Madras Presidency struggled for liberation from socio-economi... more Dalits of Telugu-speaking region of Madras Presidency struggled for liberation from socio-economic, and politico-cultural deprivation by mobilizing under the “Adi-Andhra” identity. They worked for eradication of untouchability, achieving education, land, jobs and political representation using modern ideas of equality and empowerment challenging Hindu tradition. Existing scholarship represented Dalit movements as either autonomous from or integral to Congressite nationalism and Hinduism. However, I would argue that to accomplish their objectives, Dalits constantly interacted with both colonial state, Hindu nationalists between 1917 and 1930, and it is essential to recognize that Dalit movements were neither reducible to these nor entirely estranged from them. However, they had expressed their dissatisfactions at times on both Hindu nationalist reform and colonial policies on Dalit emancipation programmes.
