Electronic structure and transport characteristics of coupled CdS and ZnSe quantum dots are studi... more Electronic structure and transport characteristics of coupled CdS and ZnSe quantum dots are studied using density functional theory and non equilibrium Greens function method respectively. Our investigations show that in these novel coupled dots, the frontier occupied and unoccupied molecular orbitals are spatially located in two different parts of the coupled dot, thereby indicating the possibility of asymmetry in electronic transport. We have calculated electronic transport through the coupled quantum dot by varying the coupling strength between the individual quantum dots in the limits of weak and strong coupling. Calculations reveal asymmetric current vs voltage curves in both the limits indicating the rectifying properties of the coupled quantum dots. Additionally we discuss the possibility to tune the switching behavior of the coupled dots by different gate geometries.

Semiconductor coupled quantum dots provide a unique opportunity of tuning bandgaps by tailoring b... more Semiconductor coupled quantum dots provide a unique opportunity of tuning bandgaps by tailoring band offsets, making them ideal for photovoltaic and other applications. Here, we have studied stability, trends in the band gap, band offsets, and optical properties for a series of coupled quantum dots comprised of II-VI semiconductor using a hybrid functional method. We have shown how the quantum confinement and interfacial strain considerably affect the band gap and band offsets for these heterostructures at the nanoscale. We show that the trend in band offsets obtained from our first-principles electronic structure calculations agrees with that obtained from the method of average electrostatic potential. It is found that a common anion rule for band offset is followed for these heterostructures at the nanoscale. Further, the calculated optical absorption spectra for these coupled quantum dots reveal that absorption peaks lie in the ultra-violet (UV) region, whereas absorption edges are in the visible region. In addition to electronic and optical properties, we have also explored transport properties for two representative coupled quantum dots, either having common cations or common anions, which revealed asymmetric nature in current-voltage characteristics. Photoluminescence of halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) quenches rapidly due to ambient instabi... more Photoluminescence of halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) quenches rapidly due to ambient instability, inherent trap states and imperfect ligand-NCs passivation. We report a novel synthetic strategy to enhance the stability and to eliminate trap states of CsPbBr 3 NCs simultaneously by in-situ introduction of a tripodal tertiary ammonium bromide ion pair ligand [tris(2aminoethyl)ammonium bromide (TREN.4HBr)]. Tetrabromide ions saturate the PbBr 6 octahedra of CsPbBr 3 NCs to eliminate the anion vacancies while TREN with three NH 3 + branches enhances efficient encapsulation. TREN.4HBr binds strongly to prevent proton transfer that leads to facile ligand loss from the NCs surfaces. Ultrafast femtosecond transient absorption kinetics reveal removal of shallow trap states in the CsPbBr 3 NCs leading to a faster carrier recombination to enhances the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). We validate the enhancement in the PLQY by designing light emitting diodes with external quantum efficiency of 3.4%. Our work unveils a mechanism for rational improvements of stability and PLQY of CsPbBr 3 NCs simultaneously.
While it was speculated that 5d 4 systems would possess non-magnetic J = 0 ground state due to st... more While it was speculated that 5d 4 systems would possess non-magnetic J = 0 ground state due to strong Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC), all such systems have invariably shown presence of magnetic moments so far. A puzzling case is that of Ba 2 YIrO 6 , which in spite of having a perfectly cubic structure with largely separated Ir 5+ (d 4) ions, has consistently shown presence of weak magnetic moments. Moreover, we clearly show from Muon Spin Relaxation (µSR) measurements that a change in the magnetic environment of the implanted muons in Ba 2 YIrO 6 occurs as temperature is lowered below 10 K. This observation becomes counterintuitive, as the estimated value of SOC obtained by fitting the RIXS spectrum of Ba 2 YIrO 6 with an atomic j − j model is found to be as high as 0.39 eV, meaning that the system within this model is neither expected to possess moments nor exhibit temperature dependent magnetic response. Therefore we argue that the atomic j − j coupling description is not sufficient to explain the ground state of such systems, where despite having strong SOC, presence of hopping triggers delocalisation of holes, resulting in spontaneous generation of magnetic moments. Our theoretical calculations further indicate that these moments favour formation of spin-orbital singlets in the case of Ba 2 YIrO 6 , which is manifested in µSR experiments measured down to 60 mK.
It is observed that planar Ni (II)-Schiff base complexes of general formulae NiL with L as N, Ń-b... more It is observed that planar Ni (II)-Schiff base complexes of general formulae NiL with L as N, Ń-bis(4-hydroxy salicylidene)ethylenediamine (4-OH-salen) when encapsulated in the supercage of zeolite Y, the complex adopts non-planar geometry. The detailed characterization studies of the 4-OH-Nisalen complex when compared with Ni-salen complex encapsulated in zeolite Y (Ni-salen-Y)[1] have suggested that the complex undergoes more distortion in order to accommodate itself inside the supercage of zeolite-Y. Optical spectroscopic studies show relatively more blue shifted and intensified d-d transition for 4-OH-Ni-salen complex after encapsulation. We also report the catalytic activities and enhanced magnetization of encapsulated complex though it is diamagnetic in the 'free' state. DFT studies of these complexes have been carried out in different spin states and electronic spectra are simulated to have better insight about the geometries adopted by the guest complexes inside the host framework. Abstract Aggregation behavior of luminophores is a subject of great interest over more than half ... more Abstract Aggregation behavior of luminophores is a subject of great interest over more than half a century. Aggregation generally causes quenching of luminescence of luminophores, which is detrimental for the solid state electroluminescence device fabrication. In oppose to the aggregation caused quenching, aggregation-induced emission phenomenon leads to highly luminescence state of luminophores upon aggregate formation. However, aggregation-induced emission behavior of the luminophores is commonly observed in irregular bulk solids, by adding antisolvents into a solution or in the biological cells, where the state of aggregation remains uncontrolled. Here we report on the synthesis of a new tailor made luminogen, 4′,4‴-(2,2-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)ethene-1,1-diyl)bis([1,1′-biphenyl]-4-carbaldehyde) (TPE 2) using Suzuki coupling reaction with high yield. We form the well-controlled supramolecular aggregates of TPE 2 at the air−water interface of a Langmuir trough. As a consequence, the mono- and multilayer Langmuir−Blodgett films of TPE 2 show a large enhancement of luminescence in comparison to the solution phase owing to the aggregation-induced emission phenomenon. We reveal inherent interaction of TPE 2 complexes within the supramolecular aggregates using density functional theory. This unique feature of luminescence enhancement is utilized for the fabrication of light-emitting diodes with low threshold voltage using TPE 2 as active layer. This study opens up the advantage of ordered supramolecular assembly to achieve optimal luminescence performances.

Increasing exposure to arsenic (As) contaminated ground water is a great threat to humanity. Suit... more Increasing exposure to arsenic (As) contaminated ground water is a great threat to humanity. Suitable technology for As immobilization and removal from water, especially for As(III) than As(V), is not available yet. However, it is known that As(III) is more toxic than As(V) and most groundwater aquifers, particularly the Gangetic basin in India, is alarmingly contaminated with it. In search of a viable solution here, we took a cue from the natural mineralization of Tooeleite, a mineral containing Fe(III) and As(III) ions, grown under acidic condition, in presence of SO 4 2− ions. Complying to this natural process, we could grow and separate Tooeleite-like templates from Fe(III) and As(III) containing water at overall circumneutral pH and in absence of SO 4 2− ions by using highly polar Zn-only ends of wurtzite ZnS nanorods as insoluble nano-acidic-surfaces. The central idea here is to exploit these insoluble nanoacidic-surfaces (called as INAS in the manuscript) as nucleation centres for Tooeleite growth while keeping the overall pH of the aqueous media neutral. Therefore, we propose a novel method of artificial mineralization of As(III) by mimicking a natural process at nanoscale.
Fe(III) oxides and oxyhydroxides play a very important role in contaminant cycling and mobility i... more Fe(III) oxides and oxyhydroxides play a very important role in contaminant cycling and mobility in the environment through numerous sorption mechanisms owing to their nanoparticulate nature. Generally coprecipitated from mixtures of metal ions in natural environments, Fe(III) oxyhydroxides are often doped by various impurity metal ions to a certain degree. These dopant/impurity ions then play a crucial role in the geochemical cycling of toxic contaminants like arsenic via modified adsorption energetics on Fe(III) oxyhydroxide nanoparticles. Aluminum (Al) commonly coexists with ferric salts and minerals in nature and affects the arsenic (As) binding abilities of Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. We use electronic structure studies to model the As binding potential of Al-doped Fe(III) oxyhydroxide clusters, using a "bottom-up" molecular approach to understand their role in As fixation. We start from small Al-doped Fe(III) oxyhydroxide clusters, like dimers and trimers, and gradually study larger clusters including the δ-Fe13 Keggin cluster, evaluating their As binding potential with respect to pure undoped Fe(III) oxyhydroxide clusters at each step. The calculated reaction free energies clearly show that Al doping into Fe(III) oxyhydroxide clusters reduces their As3+ binding potential, whereas the As5+ binding is not affected much due to Al doping.
