In eight chapters, the project makes use of the global circulation of Victorian literature to track literary accounts of the technological and ideological advancements of the long 19th century through to the liberal and neoliberal modernity of the 21st. In so doing, Gagnier delineates the extent to which Victorian writing plays a major conceptual and contextual role in the establishment of what we have come to regard as global modernity today.

Contemporary critique of trope of sexual liberation in African literature is mostly replete with ... more Contemporary critique of trope of sexual liberation in African literature is mostly replete with analysis of prostitution narratives, giving rise to an assumption and monolithic view of what sexual freedom or self-determination could mean. Such narratives, however, often do not yield arguments related to the critical capital of the salacious, since prostitution primarily involves transactional sex and not necessarily an inordinate sexual affair. This study privileges a generic divergence whereby analysis is hinged on the literary appreciation of salaciousness. Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s Season of Crimson Blossoms departs from prostitution plot to a pornographic depiction of sexual obscenity: the venereal affair between Binta Zubairu, a 55 year old widow and grandmother, and Hassan Reza, a 25 year old street gang leader. This work focused on the use of response surface method to model and to analyzes the production o... more This work focused on the use of response surface method to model and to analyzes the production of 40mm plastic pipe product in Louis Carter manufacturing industry. Data on production output and the production mixture were collected from the industry covering a period of two years. The response surface models developed were used to design and to optimize the output of the production mix of the product type investigated. The results show a new predicted design of the product mixture. The response optimum of the product shows that the maximum optimal production output of the product for any month is 142414kg which is equivalent to 142414 units of the product. Note that one (1) unit of the product has its weight to be one (1) kg. The result established a standard for the case study company over their monthly production output. There are eight volumes in the Africa Pulse series from Oxford University Press. Taken together, ... more There are eight volumes in the Africa Pulse series from Oxford University Press. Taken together, this set of books represents one of the most dynamic contributions to the African literary heritage for many years. As the publisher’s note states ‘the texts translated for this series have been identified time and again by scholars of literature in southern Africa as classics in their original languages’ (iii). I review four of them here. Stitching a Whirlwind comprises forty-two poems or excerpts from longer poems, with the originals and their English translations printed on facing pages. In her Foreword, one of the translators, Gabeba Baderoon, states that when the poems are gathered together (and bearing in mind southern Africa’s history of enforced separation) they ‘engage in an imaginative exchange across barriers of language, author and period, overcoming decades of riven conversations’ (viii). One notes that this is something the poems are being asked to do, not necessarily part of their authors’ aspirations. Nonetheless, Baderoon’s point is borne out by the anthology, where poems in each language are not clustered together – rather, the arrangement is, roughly speaking, thematic – which strengthens the point about speaking across. Antjie Krog, another of the volume’s translators and the coordinator of the translation team, states in her introduction that: ‘[t]his anthology gives readers a glimpse of the incredible depth and wealth of beauty, knowledge, flair and brilliance found in the literatures of indigenous languages in southern Africa’ (xiii), and the volume bears this out in trumps. The volume opens with love poems and poems on beautiful women, for example, in ‘Nomkhosi of My Father’, by B M Vilikazi, the speaker declares: ‘Your firm steps as you walk/tire a young man courting./He passes you and then takes a glance backwards,/watches you and tears flow’ (). One of the most striking poems, Otty Nxumalo’s ‘Why Does It Keep Saying?’, protests at the repeated cry of a dove, reminding him painfully of lost patterns of social behaviour and interaction, a topic that might have proven maudlin but is made vibrant by the poet’s close observation and wit: ‘Here they eat sweets and ice blocks... here they don’t milk into their mouths— they pour from the bottle’ (). Another Zulu poet represented here is Princess Constance Magogo, whose love poem ‘HoldMe, HoldMe!’ is wonderfully raunchy. There are poems on the ravages of colonialism and apartheid, with one of the most powerful, and extended, pieces by H R Jolobe built around the refrain ‘I have seen the making of a slave/In a young yoke-ox’ (). One of the most challenging, even shocking, poems is ‘A Resister’s Reply to a Christian Convert!’

The present research was designed for the investigation of heavy metal geochemistry of soils in s... more The present research was designed for the investigation of heavy metal geochemistry of soils in selected industrial and farmlands of Enugu State. Soil samples were randomly collected at depths of 0.5m from 60 sites at dumpsites, industries, wetlands, mechanic workshops, roadsides, animal dungs and river beds during wet and dry seasons using soil auger and polythene bags. The soil samples were analyzed for Fe 3+ , Mn, As, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Ni and Cu using standard analytical methods. The results show mean value of Fe 3+ ranging from 515.62 to 107.8 mg/kg in the wet season and 578.7 to 107.8mg/kg during the dry season. Mn varies between 83.5-18.05 mg/kg in the wet season and 101.9-18.1 mg/kg in the dry season. As range from 48.35-20.9 mg/kg during the wet season as well as 46.97-25.25 mg/kg during the dry season. Mean levels of Pb ranged from 106.6 to 51.3 mg/kg in the wet season and 96.1 to 43.8 mg/kg in the dry season. Zn concentration in the wet season varied between 425.05 and 228.95 mg/kg, and is slightly lower than the dry season (432.2 and 190.0 mg/kg), while Cd was found in trace amounts between 2.013 to 0.422 mg/kg in the wet season and is marginally higher than dry season (2.002 to 0.422 mg/kg). The mean values of Fe 3+ , Mn, As and Pb for both wet and dry seasons in the study area have reached pollutant level based on FAO/WHO standards for industrial and agricultural soils. Furthermore, Pearson correlation matrix of the parameters show high positive correlation between Mn and Fe; Zn and Fe; Zn and Mn; Cu and Cd; as well as Cu and Cr for both seasons which indicates the strong relation between these variables and pointed out that soils' deterioration was associated with industrial and agricultural activities. However, there is a potential risk of poisoning of humans, animals and agricultural produce by heavy metals in the study area.

The operation manager of Mega Petroleum Station was finding it difficult in managing their queuin... more The operation manager of Mega Petroleum Station was finding it difficult in managing their queuing system and was not able to determine the best number of servers that can serve arriving customers at various demand periods which affects their queue performance. This study was conducted at Chester Mega Petroleum Station in Enugu, Nigeria with the aim of addressing the identified problem. The result from the Queue Evaluation Environment showed that 8 servers gave the best system utilization values of 73.2% which is expected to reduce the respective customers waiting times (Ws) by 84.7% for the case study establishments. The result further showed that with 8 servers for the service systems, there will be no more need of server increase at the respective average arrival rates of customers/minutes and also the expected probabilities of system idleness for the case studies were negligible at 8 server utilization. The Queue Evaluation Environment was later adopted in developing a Decision Support System for the referenced service facilities. The model was recommended for PMS refill only.

Line chart was used to understand how the processing data time varies with each bread size. While the statistical summary chart was used to extract information from the data which enable us to understand the situations these data portray. However, the probability plots were used to show the fitness of the data for modeling. Furthermore, data was also analyzed statistically using chi-squared and goodness-of-fit test.

Abstract The different categories of African hustler narratives represent particular ways of addr... more Abstract The different categories of African hustler narratives represent particular ways of addressing the shortcomings of the African postcolonial economy from the perspective of the ultimately self-defeating responses of individual characters. This article examines the narrative significance of e-fraud literature as a subset of African hustler narratives. As an e-fraud novel, Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani’s I Do Not Come to You by Chance follows the lives of e-scammers for whom e-fraud practice is an alternative to the exclusionary Nigerian postcolonial economy. However, in embracing e-fraud as an alternative to their economic exclusion, e-fraudsters in Nwaubani’s novel appropriate a deceptive digital geography that is in dialogue with the same exploitative and extractive Nigerian postcolonial economic landscape which they seek to circumvent. In this way, the novel articulates the extent to which the performance of e-fraud economy as a hustle economy intersects with the arbitrariness and decline of Nigerian postcolonial economy.
