Soil and water contamination has historically threatened food safety. As ubiquitous pollutants, microplastics (MPs) have attracted increasing attention over the last few years. These particles can affect the balance of terrestrial, aquatic, and aerial ecosystems. Their negative impacts are intensified when they adsorb and carry toxic chemicals. They can circulate through organisms and accumulate in human beings via food and water. Physiological dysfunctions in all species continue to be reported, both in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This article considers how this might be affecting the global production of food. It reports the adverse effects induced by MPs in soils, their properties and organisms growing within and upon them, including livestock and the pollinating agents necessary for plant growth. A separate section discusses the effects of MPs on aquacu...

This is the case of the Paranaguá Estuarine System (PES), located in Southern Brazil, home to one of the largest ports in Latin America and it still boasts of a remarkable biodiversity surrounding by threatened mangrove areas. In this context, this study aimed to assess the quality of sediments concerning metals and metalloid As contamination and comparison to sediment contamination guidelines. In addition, biochemical normalization factors were applied to find out if the sources of the investigated elements were natural or anthropogenic. In 2018, 38 surface sediment samples were sampled seasonally from different PES areas to the determination to metals, metalloid As, and geochemical characteristics. Higher element values analyzed were detected close to the cities of Antonina and Paranaguá and near river mouths, potentially associated with port activities and...

In Brazil, the combination of poor sanitation conditions and low investment in sewage treatment plants leads to significant contamination of receiving waters. The risks of these micropollutants in the aquatic biota include biochemical and histopathological alterations of the liver, gonads, and kidneys, as well as, reproductive process and development modifications, and behavioral changes, among others. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the surface and deep waters of Guanabara Bay, southeastern Brazil, regarding the presence of estrogenic substances. Acute toxicity assays were also conducted employing Vibrio fischeri. The estrogenic activity of the water samples was determined by Yeast Estrogen Screen assay and the quantification of the Bisphenol A, estriol, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol by high-performance liquid chromatography, usi...

In this context, the application and improvement of efficient analytical methods are increasingly required to verify the potential impacts of these substances on the organisms exposed to them. Bioassays can be conducted with this purpose, such as the yeast estrogen screen (YES) in vitro assay, which allows the detection of estrogenic and cytotoxic compounds. This study, applying the YES assay, investigated the estrogenic activity and its potential risks to the aquatic biota of two streams in Santa Maria Madalena, Rio de Janeiro State, Southeastern Brazil. Estrogenic activity was observed only in São Domingos stream, with estradiol equivalent (EEQ) concentrations of 23 and 10.4 ng.L−1 during the dry and rainy season, respectively. The potential risks of this level of estrogenic activity were evaluated by a risk assessment, which revealed a high and medium risk...

They enter water bodies mainly through domestic sewage. This paper aims to review the estrone, estradiol, estriol and ethinyl estradiol occurrence in untreated and treated sewage and surface water, as well as their removal efficiency through employment of different sewage biological treatment methods. The few studies carried out in Brazil show a significant concentration of these compounds in the reviewed sources, with a downward trend from raw to treated sewage. Aerobic systems, such as activated sludge, showed better results at removing the estrogens, mainly through adsorption by sludge. However, little is known about the degradation mechanisms of such compounds and the behavior of their conjugates. Therefore, biological processes of sewage treatment represent a barrier to the introduction of estrogens to the water bodies.

Some of the compounds discharged in this waterbody, even at low concentrations, can have an impact on the aquatic biota. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the quality of sediments found in the lagoon system. In total, 39 contaminants were analyzed (metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls) and acute toxicity was assessed through the luminescence of bacterium Vibrio fischeri (Microtox®). Based on results, the sediments collected presented concentrations below the detection limit rates set for almost all the assessed compounds, except for some metals. In comparison to similar studies and baselines found in the literature, the concentrations observed in this study are higher for Cu and Zn and lower for Pb and Ni. These same patterns were observed in comparison to national and international regulatory guidelines. The toxicity analysis, using bacterium V. fischeri, for samples collected at the 10 sites showed that only one of these sites recorded intense toxic activity. The Hormesis effect was observed in almost all sites in both sampling campaigns. Sampling sites located closer to the mouths of the larger tributaries and of Camboata channel showed significant changes in the quality of their sediments. The present study brings contributions to the knowledge about a significant range of contaminants and physicochemical characteristics of sediments collected in Itaipu and Piratininga lagoons.

In recent decades, the Itaipu–Piratininga lagoon system has suffered a series of environmental impacts, among which water pollution stands out. In this context, the aim of this study was to analyse the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupters in water (dissolved and particulate phases) and in surface sediments, and their potential oestrogenic effects. Contaminant concentrations were determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, whereas oestrogenic activity was evaluated using the yeast oestrogen screen assay. Of the 12 compounds analysed, concentrations of gemfibrozil, acetaminophen and diclofenac were below the limit of detection. The compounds with the highest detection frequency in the water were bisphenol A>4-octylphenol>naproxen>oestradiol, whereas in the sediment were bi...
