The Indian diamond industry witnessed a severe recession in the year 2008. The industry is alread... more The Indian diamond industry witnessed a severe recession in the year 2008. The industry is already showing signs of recovery in 2009 led by its large-sized firms. This case presents facts from a study conducted in a large-sized Indian diamond processing firm which has existed for the last 40 years and led the revival of the industry. It includes description of the company policies, management practices, innovations, the organization structure, and other unique systems. It also describes the exemplary business acumen and leadership qualities of the founder of the unit of our case. Besides, this is the first such study conducted in the Indian diamond industry which has otherwise remained undocumented in spite of an extraordinary global performance.

The present research explores the relationship of emotional labor strategies (i.e., surface and d... more The present research explores the relationship of emotional labor strategies (i.e., surface and deep acting) with emotional exhaustion, organizational commitment, and turnover intentions among employees in the hospitality industry in India. Data were collected from 204 frontline hotel employees representing different departments. The results of the study demonstrate that surface acting is positively related with emotional exhaustion and turnover intentions and negatively related to affective organizational commitment. Moreover, deep acting was observed to have a negative influence on emotional exhaustion. The findings of the study indicate that frequent use of surface acting may have detrimental consequences for employees as well as for the organization. Managerial implications of the study are discussed.

To explain career development of professional men and women, the developmental approach is becomi... more To explain career development of professional men and women, the developmental approach is becoming increasingly popular as it allows for a broad perspective encompassing both work and family roles. It recognizes the fact that developmentally men and women are different. The present study explored whether, for dual-career couples working in the Indian context, the salience attached to different life roles by male and female partners does indeed vary differentially across the life cycle in keeping with the propositions of the adult developmental theories of men and women. Data were collected from 92 dual-career couples. Results provided only partial support for the propositions of adult development theories, examined in terms of the differences between the life role salience of male and female partners. In particular, the expected reversal of salience attached to work and family roles at mid-life, between men and women, was not evident. Our results seem to challenge the universality ...

The paper examined exposure, gender, use and organizational level as correlates of Attitudes Towa... more The paper examined exposure, gender, use and organizational level as correlates of Attitudes Toward Computers (ATC) among bank employees in India. The ATC scale and a demographic profile were administered to a sample of 213 bank personnel. Our study found no relationship of exposure and gender to ATC. Use of computers was related with ATC. Organizational level showed a strong relationship with ATC, with bank officers holding a much more positive attitude toward computers than clerks. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

It argues that constant search for people potential in teams and as individuals has to be an important item on organizational agenda, more so in the current context of rapid changes in the environment of today’s organizations. Potential discovery processes are needed for fuller utilisation of talents which often remain unidentified and underdeveloped. After presenting a conceptual framework, the paper discusses organizational factors which influence the potential discovery process. It presents the case study of a successful organization which has consciously chosen systems and processes that facilitate the discovery, development and utilisation of people potential. Need for organizational mechanisms to sustain the potential discovery process is emphasised.

The present study was undertaken to find out whether different influence tactics are evaluated th... more The present study was undertaken to find out whether different influence tactics are evaluated the same way, or differently, in downward and upward exercise of influence; whether appropriateness and effectiveness constitute two different dimensions of evaluation; and whether the sex of the influence agent and the influence target affects the evaluation of influence tactics. Data were collected from 144 bank managers. Results showed that for influencing subordinates, many more tactics are seen as being highly appropriate and effective, than for influencing superiors. Appropriateness and effectiveness emerged as two different dimensions of evaluation. The sex of the influence agent had no effect on the evaluation of influence tactics; however, the sex of the influence target affected the evaluation of the appropriateness of different influence tactics. Implications of these findings are presented.

This is sequel to an earlier study carried out in 1992 which documented the emergence of SIDH. The earlier report traced the genesis of SIDH, its objectives and activities at a nascent stage. The present study reports the grwoth and coming of age of SIDH which now has a clear mission, focus, and a set of values. These help the organisation make conscious choices about the activities it wants to undertake because these are consistent with its mission, and the ones it does not want to undertake because they are incongruent with either SIDH’s mission or values. Bulk of the existing literature on how contradictory goals can be pursued successfully focuses on a single pair of contradictory goals, largely pursued by private sector organizations. This empirical study identifies a system of multiple pairs of contradictory goals, associated with structural separation of subunits of a public sector organization in India. Emergence of contradictory goals appeared as linked with the dynamics of key stakeholder interests. The study revealed that the top and middle managers may respond differently to a pair of contradictory goals, and the same manager also responds differently to different pairs of contradictory goals.
