Corona discharges in air in positive and negative polarity were used for biodecontamination of gl... more Corona discharges in air in positive and negative polarity were used for biodecontamination of glass surfaces from planktonic Escherichia coli and its biofilm. In order to enhance the bactericidal effect of the plasma, water was electrosprayed from a hollow electrode onto the sample for either half or the entire treatment time. The best biodecontamination efficiency of 4.5 log was achieved with electrospray during 20 min of treatment by positive streamer corona. Our first results on E. coli biofilm treatment are presented and a possible loss of biofilm biomass is measured. In order to better understand the processes of bacteria inactivation, the electrosprayed water was chemically analysed.

Paschen’s Law in Extreme Pressure and Temperature Conditions

Paschen's law gives the inception voltage for an electrical discharge as a function of the produc... more Paschen's law gives the inception voltage for an electrical discharge as a function of the product of gas pressure and the gap distance between two infinite planar electrodes. It is known that deviations from Paschen's law occur when temperature is increased. Historically two theoretical corrections, the Peek and Dumbar corrections, are proposed to predict the deviation from Paschen's law by increasing temperature. To carry out an experimental investigation on the deviation from Paschen's law by increasing temperature a customized system was designed which can operate at temperatures up to 400°C and at pressure up to 1MPa, calculated at room temperature; with an inter-electrode distance between 100µm and 6.6mm and with an error on the inter-electrode distance measurement of 20µm. In this article, firstly, the results from the experimental investigation on the deviation from Paschen's law at temperature up to 400°C are presented. The results are then compared with theoretical corrections, and finally a theory to explain the results is proposed and discussed.

Approach of the Physical and Chemical Specific Properties of Pulsed Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharges in Air at Atmospheric Pressure

Investigations were carried out on point-to-plane dielectric barrier discharges with two differen... more Investigations were carried out on point-to-plane dielectric barrier discharges with two different gas gap lengths (d = 0 and 2 mm), energized with two different high voltage power supplies providing one an ac signal at 15 kHz and the other a pulsed signal with a same repetition rate. Correlations between the electrical properties and the behavior of the plasma in these different situations were established through ozone generation, and by the way O radicals net production, checking for this purpose that in our operating conditions gasheating influence remained minor. Using the representation ozone concentration vs. charge amount transferred through current pulses, the specific electrical and thus physical properties of pulsed surface discharges are put in light; in these discharges, compared to ac and pulsed volume discharges, current pulses exhibit, for a given charge per pulse, the highest amplitudes and the shortest durations.

Temporal evolution of OH density and gas temperature of nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharges in water vapor at atmospheric pressure

We present a study of plasma discharges produced by nanosecond repetitively pulses in water vapor... more We present a study of plasma discharges produced by nanosecond repetitively pulses in water vapor at 450 K and 1 atm. The plasma was generated in water vapor with 20-ns duration high-voltage (0-20 kV) pulses, at a repetition frequency of 10 kHz, in the spark regime (2 mJ/pulse). To investigate plasma kinetics we focused on intermediate products of the discharge, in particular the hydroxyl radical. Between two discharges, the time-resolved density of OH was measured by Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (OH-PLIF). The temperature during the discharge was determined by optical emission spectroscopy, and between two pulses by two-color OH-PLIF. A 150 K preheating effect from the previous pulses is measured, with a maximum temperature elevation of 950 K during the first 10 µs following each pulse. The OH density measurements were compared with chemical kinetics simulations. The numerical results obtained with an initial OH density of 500 ppm show good agreement with the experimental data, thus providing a quantification of the OH density produced by the pulse. The electron number density is also measured via stark broadened H β lines. A kinetics model is proposed to interpret the measures.
