In line with dual process models of EC, we hypothesized that manipulating the learning context to bolster affect misattribution should strengthen EC effects on implicit attitudes toward alcohol, while encouraging propositional processing of CS-US pairs should strengthen EC effects on explicit attitudes. In our study (n=114) we manipulated whether CS-US pairs were presented simultaneously or sequentially. Recollective memory was estimated with a process dissociation procedure. Both implicit and explicit attitudes were assessed immediately after the procedure. Behavioral intentions were measured after and one week after the protocol. We found that EC with sequential presentation had a stronger impact on implicit and explicit measures and on purchase intentions immediately after the procedure and one week after. We then conducted a small-scale meta-analysis including all studies EC on alcohol attitudes and drinking (k=4; n=420). The present study provides new and meta-analytic evidence that (i) EC is an effective way to change implicit attitudes toward alcohol and (ii) evidence that EC is better described by propositional rather than dual process accounts.

Alcohol cognition are acquired via two distinct but partially overlapping systems: a conscious de... more Alcohol cognition are acquired via two distinct but partially overlapping systems: a conscious deliberative system (reflexive) and an non-conscious associative system (impulsive). In this view, alcohol consumption is due to a failure in regulating impulses toward alcohol. Our objective is to develop an evaluative conditioning procedure impacting specifically the impulsive system, by bolstering affect misattribution. Participants (n=137) went through a 2 (contingency awareness: inclusion vs exclusion) x2 (stimulus presentation: simultaneous vs sequential) x2 (valence of US : neutral vs negative). Implicit and explicit attitudes and behavioral intentions have been assessed after and one week after the protocol. Since affect misattribution depend on source confusability, simultaneous presentation will have a stronger effect on implicit attitudes and lead to less contingency awareness. Results show that negative conditioning in the simultaneous condition have a stronger impact on implicit but not on explicit measures and on behavioral intention at one week. A stronger attitude parameter in the simultaneous condition has been obtained. Relevance of dual-process models and the effectiveness of conditioning in alcohol use will be discussed.

Pourtant, la prise en compte des propositions qui émanent des groupes minoritaires peut permettre d’adopter des perspectives permettant potentiellement de prendre de meilleures décisions. Dans cette thèse, nous étudions les variables de personnalité qui, au niveau de la cible d’influence, favorisent la réceptivité d’un point de vue minoritaire. Les études portent sur des thèmes pour lesquels les attitudes préexistent. Autrement dit, nous nous intéressons au changement d’attitudes à l’égard de thèmes tels que le véganisme ou le covoiturage. Notre intérêt porte également sur l’influence indirecte, concernant donc des thèmes proches des objets d’attitude sur lesquels portent la tentative d’influence, tels que l’écologie ou l’anti-anthropocentrisme.
