Animal studies suggest that some effects are based on exercise-induced alterations in serotonin (5-HT) secretion. This study evaluates the impact of different aerobic exercise intensities on 5-HT serum levels as well as on executive functioning considering 5-HT as a potential mediator. 121 young adults (23.8 ± 3.6 years) were examined in a randomized controlled trial including three exercise intervention (35 min) groups (low intensity, 45 % of the maximal heart rate (HRmax); moderate intensity, 65 % HRmax; high intensity, 85 % HRmax) and one control group. 5-HT levels and response inhibition (measured by a computerized Stroop test) were assessed pre- and post-intervention. There was a significant (p = 0.022) difference between groups regarding serum Δ5-HT levels. Post hoc tests indicated significant (p = 0.013) higher 5-HT serum levels for the high-intensity group compared to the control group whil...

Unfortunately, there are numerous errors in the accompanying text. The β-adrenergic receptor in the uterus is the β 2adrenoceptor. This matters because the pharmacological agents used are β 2-adrenoceptor agonists ([2], page 433). There are different G proteins. The G protein involved in the signal transduction of the β2adrenoceptor is the stimulatory G s protein ([2], page 320). The represented oxytocin receptors and prostaglandin receptors also act through G proteins-in particular, G q proteins. Also, for these receptors, phospholipase C as an effector is missing. There is not only one prostaglandin receptor, but it needs to be specified that prostaglandin F2α induces a contraction of the smooth muscle cells through the FP-receptor ([2], page 445). The receptors are represented by different symbols. The prostaglandin receptor suggests a channel-like structure with one pore and two receptor units. This is erroneous. Prostaglandin receptors are not among the group of the ligand-controlled ion channels but among the group of G-protein-linked receptors. All depicted receptors should have been represented with 7 transmembrane domains ([2], page 64-66). There is no molecule with the name "inosidol phosphate." The molecule that mobilizes Ca 2+ from intracellular stores is called inosidol-1,4,5trisphosphate and originates from the breakdown of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate through phospholipase C ([2], page 64-66). The soluble guanylyl cyclase as a receptor for NOpharmacological agents is lacking from the figure. Guanylyl cyclase synthesizes cGMP from GTP. Guanylyl cyclase should have been included in the figure because cAMP-synthesizing adenylyl cyclase is also shown ([2], page 535). Calcium channel antagonists of the dihydropyridine type, such as nifedipine, inhibit the Ca 2+ influx through voltage-dependent calcium channels located in the plasma membrane, not the release of calcium from intracellular stores ([2], page 505). Indomethacine is obsolete because of its high rate of adverse side effects and should be replaced with substances that are better tolerated , such as ibuprofen ([2], page 211-12).

A therapy with low-molecular- weight heparin is usual in deep vein thrombosis with thrombophilia, in woman with recurrent abortions or other risks, like EPH-gestosis or HELLP-Syndrom. The efficacy of a mono-therapy with LMWH (3000-16000 daily) in women with risk pregnancies has been examined prospectively. The dates of 676 pregnant women have been analysed and compared to the current literature about live birth rates without therapy and tot he results of other, similar studies. The live birth rate has been the target variable. We obtained main a live birth rate of 98.6%. There has been no record of serious adverse effects. We obtained a live birth rate of 95.8% if NMH therapy starts early, and a live birth rate of 100% if NMH therapy starts between week 20 and 25. For the live birth rate the existence of thrombophilic gene polymorphisms is irrelevant. The high live birth weight is depended on early starting the therapy with NMH. For the late...

Mucosal bleedings and post-operative haematomas can occur more frequently. This is seen in an increased in vivo bleeding time without other plasmatic coagulation disorders or thrombopathies. Pregnancy complications, especially abortions before the 15th week of gestation, are described as well. Since May 2011 the plasmatic concentration of protein Z has been tested in 684 patients of the Hämostaseologicum. In 74 patients a protein Z deficiency has been found. In other 45 patients protein Z was reduced because of the intake of phenprocoumon or coumadin. Of the 74 patients with diminished protein Z concentration 39 were marginally decreased (protein Z 1000-1500 µg/l). Of the 35 patients with a protein Z concentration <1000 µg/l 12 had had a thrombosis before (6 strokes, 3 DVT or PE, 1 arterial thrombosis, 1 retinal branch vein occlusion, 1 acute hearing loss). 7 had arterial hyperte...

STUDY DESIGN: A 16-week prospective nonrandomized clinical trial (n = 20). Tinnitus and Short Form-36 Questionnaires (TQ/SF-36) were evaluated together with the plasma concentrations of CoQ10, malondialdehyde, and the total antioxidant status. RESULTS: The mean plasma CoQ10 concentration rose under external CoQ10 supply and remained elevated after medication stopped without overall effects on the tinnitus score. However, in a subgroup of 7 patients with low initial plasma CoQ10 concentration and significant increase in the plasma CoQ10 level, a clear decrease in the TQ score was observed. CONCLUSION: In patients with a low plasma CoQ10 concentration, CoQ10 supply may decrease the tinnitus expression. SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first study to examine the effect of CoQ10 in chronic tinnitus aurium. © 2007 American Academy o...

The objective of the study was to assess the analytical performance of 49 analytes, and to collect feedback on the system’s reliability and practicability. The typical, within-run coefficients of variation (CVs) for most of the quantitative assays ranged between 1 and 2% while a range of 2–4% was achieved with the infectious disease methods. Total precision CVs were found to be within the manufacturer’s expected performance ranges, demonstrating good concordance of the system’s measuring channels and a high reproducibility during the 2–4-week trial period. The functional sensitivity of 11 selected assays met the clinical requirements (e.g., thyreotroponin (TSH) 0.008 mU/l, troponin T 0.02 µg/l, total prostate-specific antigen (PSA) 0.03 µg/l). The E170 showed no drift during an 8-hour period and no relevant reagent carryover. Accuracy was confirmed by ring trial experiments and method comparisons vs. El...
