Ghalib Tamim
From a Telecomm Engineer to a Researcher on Muslim Ulamaa (Scholars). I come from a background of Ulamaa in the family. My first research was on Sh. Al-Amin b. Ali Mazrui (1891-1947). My first book printed in 2006 was thus on the biography of this Kenyan Muslim Scholar whose impact is still being felt and researched so many decades after his death. Sh. Al-Amin is Prof Ali Mazrui's (1933-2014) father. Since then I have researched and written 3 other books on East African Ulamaa.
Ghalib trained as a Telecommunications’ Engineer in Kenya, Ireland, Japan and USA. He has lectured in Kenya and Zimbabwe at their Telecoms Training Centres in Nairobi and Harare respectively. His area of specialization being Cable Networks and Lightning & Power Surge Protection.
Since his retirement from Telkom Kenya in 2006, Ghalib has taken an interest in research on Islamic Leadership in East Africa and Science in the Qur’an. He is an author of 6 biographies, 5 on Ulamaa and one on a down-to-earth Muslim Lady Philanthropist in Kenya. Four of these books are in Kiswahili:
1. Maisha ya Sheikh Al-Amin bin Ali Mazrui (1891-1947);
2. Sheikh Ali bin Abdalla Naf’i (1825-1894): The Pioneering Role Model of East Africa Muslim Reformers;
3. Maisha ya Sheikh Muhammad Kassim Al-Maamiry (1850-1910).
4. Lulu Ya Takaungu: Ramla Rashid Abdalla Mazrui (1963-2012);
5. Sheikh Muhammad Kassim Mazrui (1912-1982): Namna Alivyoutumikia
Ummah
6. Bustani La Ma-Ulamaa - On 2 Scholarly families in Mombasa & Zanzibar: Sheikh Ali bin Abdalla bin Naf’i Mazrui (1825-1894) and his son, Sheikh Al-Amin b. Ali Mazrui (1891-1947); and the family of Sayyid Ahmad bin Abu Bakr bin Sumeyt (1861-1925) and his son, Sayyid Umar bin Ahmad bin Sumeyt (1886-1976).
He has also written on Pilgrimage, Hajj & Umrah – Step by Step and a text book for Primary Class Two Islamic Religious Education (IRE), Prayer by the Roadside.
He has several papers to his credit that are available on www.academia.edu

Papers by Ghalib Tamim
It looks at the relationship between the PEN, READING and DISCIPLINE. To study requires discipline, for without it you cannot acquire knowledge. Without the PEN (keyboard for those using their laptops etc), you cannot document you lessons. And without READING your study materials, you cannot internalise the field or area of your studies.
The Conversation is therefore meant to prepare the student to respect the means of acquiring knowledge - the PEN, READING and DISCIPLINE.
Young people need an enabling environment in which they are encouraged to participate in their own and their country’s development. Young people are an asset to their communities and pathways need to be established to ensure their inclusion and participation in all aspects of development.
Developing positive attitudes, participatory skills and leadership should commence in school, where educational experiences can integrate soft skills, concepts of community service, classroom knowledge and critical reflection to promote understanding. Opportunities for broader youth participation need to be created not only in the public sector, but also in the private sector through partnerships that encourage market orientation, build leadership capacity and promote youth entrepreneurship.
In this paper we present challenges facing schools and universities in their preparation of future leaderships. We would like to debate pros and cons, and make recommendations on how best to create Personality Development Education Awareness.

- PRESENTED AT THE NUBUWWAH INTERFAITH CONFERENCE ORGANISED BY SHIA ASNA ASHRI JAMAAT (SAAJ) AT THE JAFFERY ISLAMIC CENTRE, LAVINGTON, NAIROBI ON 7 JUNE 2015
Syd.
Bereki, Maalim Ghazali na Maalim Said b. Ahmed Al-Kumri.
Prof Mazrui was named after his grandfather, Sh. Ali b. Abdalla Naf'i, the Pioneering Role Model of East African Islamic Reformers. There are so many similarities in the life histories of Prof Ali Mazrui with both his father and grandfather. Is it a case of genetics or is it merely coincidences?
All the three Mazruis left behind large legacies. They have become subjects of studies for researchers. This paper is a case study of Re-incarnation in the Mazrui Family.
His expectations came to pass! The young Ali Mazrui grew up to become the Global Academic Giant, Prof Ali Al'Amin Mazrui. Academic genes were passed from the great grandfathers, down to the great grandson. The son has left a large Legacy befitting the Legacy of his father and grandfather. DNA works!
I salute the Scholarly works of Sh. Ali b. Abdalla Naf'i, Sh. Al-Amin b. Ali Mazrui and Prof Ali Al'Amin Mazrui. May the three Mazrui intellectuals rest in Eternal Peace - Amin.
Both Sh. Al-Amin and his son, Prof Mazrui continued the family tradition of scholarly works. The father (Sh. Ali b. Abdalla Naf'i - 1825-1894) and grandfather (Sh. Abdalla b. Naf'i) of Sh. Al-Amin were top-notch scholars. No wonder, Prof Mazrui inherited the scholarly trait from family tradition.
Prof Mazrui who was named after his Paternal Grandfather was crown a LIVING LEGEND a couple of years back. Now he leaves behind a LEGACY - Alhamdu Lillah!
He passed away at Binghamton, New York on 12th October, 2014 at around 3.45 pm US time.
May Allah rest his soul in Eternal Peace - Amin.

Sheikh Al-Amin Mazrui was one of the great men of letters in East African History. He was a writer, an editor, a critic of Swahili and Arabic poetry, a theologian, a newspaperman, and a social reformer. Sh. Al-Amin has been the subject of research by so many scholars over the years. There are several research papers and thesis that are available in libraries and archives round the world about him.
Prof Mazrui’s grandfather, Sheikh Ali bin Abdalla bin Naf’i Mazrui (1825-1894) was a central figure in the history of Islam in the East African Coast. He was a widely travelled Scholar (‘Ulamaa), a sort of visiting professor. He was a scholar par excellence whose legacy includes many of the modern day reformers among the East African religious leaders.
This paper traces the scholarly path that Prof Mazrui followed in the footsteps of his forefathers.
