Methods: The study included 51 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 50 healthy individuals. The assessment of plaque vulnerability relies on quantitative and qualitative plaque ultrasound analysis. The thickness of intraabdominal adipose tissue was measured as a distance between the frontal wall of abdominal aorta and the dorsal wall of rectus abdominis muscles; the measurements are performed by placing transducer 5 cm above the umbilicus. Results: Atherosclerotic plaque was found in all of diabetic patients, comparing to 28.12% in the control group; among those, 47.06% with diabetes and 25.6% of control patients had vulnerable plaque. The vulnerability of atherosclerotic plaque was significantly related to age, duration of diabetes, glycaemia, waist circumference, waist / hip ratio, intra-abdominal adipose tissue thickness, intra-abdominal/subcutaneous fat ratio, dyslipidemia and hypertension. Conclusions: Carotid atherosclerotic plaques, particularly vulnerable ones, are far more prevalent in diabetic patients. Advanced age, poor glycemic control, obesity and the intra-abdominal fat accumulation contribute to carotid atherosclerotic plaques vulnerability. Despite the significant correlations with metabolic/anthropometric measurements, none of the predisposing factors could be identified as the independent risk factor; obviously, the increased vulnerability of has been the result of the synergistic effects of multiple pathogenic mechanisms. Moreover, ultrasound measurements of intra-abdominal fat did not show a decisive advantage over the classical anthropometric measurements in estimating atherosclerotic and metabolic risk.

Methods: An observer-blind randomized controlled study included 77 independently walking, cognitively unimpaired residents aged 78.4 ± 7.6 years, of which 66.2% were female. Physical function was assessed at baseline, after 3 and 6 months of the Otago exercise program by three performance tests: Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG) and Chair Rising Test (CRT), and functional independence by the motor Functional Independence Measure (mFIM). Results: Significant within participant effects of time in EG for BBS, TUG and CRT (p < 0.001) and for mFIM (p = 0.010) were found. Between participant effects of groups on BBS, TUG, CRT and mFIM values were not significant. Changes in values of performed three tests regarding physical function were significantly different in EG and CG (p < 0.001), as well as for functional independence test (mFIM) (p = 0.019). In EG the values got better, while in CG values worsened. Effect sizes of change in the EG were higher for BBS, TUG and CRT compared to mFIM. Conclusion: The Otago exercise program was shown as effective in improving balance, functional mobility, lower limbs muscle strength and functional independence, indicating that it could help in slowing of disability progression.

The study included 130 patients with age-related cataract, 69 of whom were diagnosed with hypertension (HT), 20 with hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and 41 had no accompanying condition. The following parameters were measured in the serum of the examinees: products of lipid peroxidation malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipofuscin-like fluorophores (LLF), activity of prooxidative enzymes xanthine oxidase (XO) and myeloperoxidase (MPO), antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), the concentration of thiol groups, and the ferric reducing activity of plasma. The activity of prooxidative enzymes XO and MPO was higher in the plasma of patients with HT (XO=9.

The precise periodicity of these growth layers remains vaguely approximated, so causal life-history explanations using tooth cementum cannot yet be rigorously calculated or tested. On the other hand, we show how life history parameters in AEFC can be identified by two contrasting elemental detection methods. Based on our results we reject the possibility of accurate estimation of pregnancies and other life history parameters from cementum using scanning electron microscopy alone. Here, we propose a new methodological approach for cementum research, Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), to measure degree and distribution of mineralization of cementum growth layers. Serum XOD activity, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), uric acid (UA), albumin, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), advanced glycation end products (AGE), total free thiols, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), and body mass index (BMI) were measured in 80 T2DM patients (29 with and 51 without DPN), and 30 nondiabetic control subjects. Duration of diabetes, hypertension, medication, and microalbuminuria was recorded. Serum XOD activities in controls, non-DPN, and DPN were5.7±2.4 U/L,20.3±8.6 U/L, and27.5±10.6 U/L (p<0.01), respectively. XOD activity was directly correlated to IMA, UA, BMI, HbA1c, and AGE, while inversely correlated to serum total free thiols. Based on the results achieved, we came to the conclusion that CABG should be recommended as a procedure for significant improvement of QoL in patients with a high CCS angina class. Angina pectoris is a symptom with a distinct influence on QoL in patients with coronary conditions [1]. In the last American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association recommendations for CABG revascularization, CABG or percutaneous coronary intervention are recommended as therapy options for improvement of symptoms in the case of unacceptable angina despite guideline-determined medical therapy [2]. We recently finished long-term examination of the patients from our study and would like to share the information from the results related to the previously mentioned article. The study included 243 consecutive patients. After the follow-up period of 11.7 AE 0.7 years, we succeeded in contacting 159 patients (62 of whom had died and 22 of whom we could not contact). Long-term QoL improvement was significantly correlated with preoperative severity of angina in relation to energy (r ¼ 0.22; p ¼ 0.005) and pain (r ¼ 0.4; p < 0.001). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression showed that the degree of preoperative angina was an independent predictor of long-term improvement of QoL in relation to energy (p ¼ 0.012; odds ratio, 1.76; 95% confidence interval, 1.13-2.74) and pain (p < 0.001; odds ratio, 3.18; 95% confidence interval, 1.83-5.52). To date, many studies have examined CABG impact on QOL in short-term or midterm follow-up, but only a few studies have examined long-term QoL after CABG [3]. There are few reports on long-term predictors of deterioration of QoL after CABG [4]. However, our study is one of the rare studies that examines the predictors of improvement and the first that shows that CCS degree of preoperative angina is an independent predictor of longterm QoL improvement after CABG. These results strengthened our decision to use CABG as symptomatic therapy in patients with high CCS angina class for the purpose of longterm improvement of QoL.
