The case of the artist - a short look on cases in the context of contemporary art

Cases, the display furniture - most of us do not think about them in depth. Despite being an impo... more Cases, the display furniture - most of us do not think about them in depth. Despite being an important furniture to a lot of museum types and collections, it is often regarded as something that should highlight its content and not to be looked at itself. (...) Coming from the background of a museum for contemporary art, the cases I want to talk about are cases made by artists for specific works of art. I want to show that these cases are integral parts of the work itself. Thus, the cases become equal to its content. Finally, I want to suggest the motivation for the artistic choice to create an art work with a case.

This text is a transcribed and edited version of the talk I gave at the conference "Making a Case for Cases: The Furniture of Display" (10-11 January 2020) at the The Bowes Museum, County Durham. This event was generously supported by the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Consortium, The Bowes Museum, The Furniture History Society and the Centre for Nineteenth Century Studies, Durham University.

The text explores the artists' investigation of the Malkasten's past, especially the building and the dealing with its destruction during the war. Furthermore, it sets into context the the artists' practice of using and transforming historical objects, history of places and their stories.
