It is considered as an indicator of biological quality and developmental stability of individual. Adverse environmental conditions and high levels of sex steroids may increase FA. Symmetry in women was found to be related with phases of the menstrual cycles (MC). This cross sectional study aimed to compare facial symmetry between women using and not using hormonal contraceptives with reference to the phases of their fertile and non-fertile phases of MC. Participants were 150 young adult Polish female students in Wrocław, Poland. Facial photograph of each woman was taken and information on the use of hormonal contraception, date of menarche, number of days past since the last menstruation (beginning of bleeding) were collected. Measurements of facial asymmetry were taken digitally in pixels on facial photographs by using ImageJ software. The results revealed that the ...

These are deterministic views and stochastic models. Proximate theories of aging constitute a distinct group of conceptions, and they involve mechanistic causes of aging. However, recent experimental studies carried out on evolutionarily distant model organisms have shown that aging can be a consequence of evolutionarily programmed and conserved signaling pathways, including insulin/IGF-1 pathway and MTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin), and does not result primarily from random accumulation of molecular damage. Based on this, an alternative and interesting theory of hyperfunction has been recently formulated, including the important "quasi-program" described by the "MTOR-centric" model of aging, rival to the disposable soma theory, and offering a completely different approach to numerous problems and paradoxes in current biogerontology, as well as ...

The study sample comprised 250 female students aged 21–24 (mean age 22.5 years) from Wroclaw universities. The study subjects were asked to complete the questionnaires about the menstrual cycle. Three different composite images of male faces that differed in the degree of masculinity were displayed on the table and assessed by these female judges. The results indicate that in the fertile phases of the cycle young females tend to prefer male faces with high degree of masculinity to those with low or moderate degrees of masculinity. However, in pre- and postovulatory phases, females tend to prefer male faces with moderate or even low degrees of masculinity. Partnership and its duration had no effect on women's preferences for masculinity in male faces whatsoever.

The aim of this paper is to establish the kind and direction of teeth asymmetry in the series of skulls from archaeological excavations. The research was conducted on 130 pairs of teeth stemming from 22 skulls (10 male and 12 female) in juvenius and adultus age and early maturus period, estimated for 16 18 century. The material comes from crypts located in St. Mary Magdalene church in Wroclaw. It has been stated that 1. There is no relation between gender and the level of fluctuating asymmetry. 2. Directional asymmetry has been observed in dimensions of three teeth of the lower jaw: canine HEALTH AND WELLNESS 2/2015 Wellness and society 186 width, first premolar and second molar depth. 3.With women, bigger teeth sizes appeared at the right side of alveolar arch. 4.Bigger tooth sizes have been proven at the left side of alveolar ar...

The male has lower 2D:4D than the female. The ratio and its sexual dimorphism vary across ethnicity. The relationships of 2D:4D with anthropometric dimensions are not consistent. Objective: To compare 2D:4D and its sexual dimorphism between the young Indian and Polish populations and to examine the relationship between 2D:4D and anthropometric measures. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 152 Indian (males: 71 females: 81) and 110 Polish (55 each sex) young adults aged between 18 and 25 years. Height, weight, waist and hip circumferences, second and fourth digit lengths were measured. Results: Males had significantly lower 2D:4D than the female in both hands in both the ethnic groups. All the anthropometric measurements were higher in Polish males, including the 2D:4D of both hands, than the Indians, except for BMI and WHR. Polish females had higher digit lengths, height, weight and HC than the Indian females. In Polish males, 2D:4D was negatively associated with height and WHR in both hands. No significant correlation was observed between any anthropometric measure (except for height) and 2D:4D among the Indians. However, the Indian Female had a nearly significant positive correlation between left 2D:4D and HC. In Indian Male correlation between left hand 2D:4D and Height is significant and similar to that of the Polish men. Conclusion: It was not possible to draw any conclusion regarding the nature of association between 2D:4D and anthropometric parameters. The findings indicate a link between fat patterning and digit ratio.

The aim of this study was to assess the age-related changes in the selected health indicators and their variability between individual groups representing different socio-economic status. MATERIAL AND METHODS The material comprised longitudinal observations of 8 years (1999-2007), concerning some parameters of the cardiovascular system, blood and BMI. The study included 148 men aged 29-57 years. RESULTS A rapidly increasing systolic blood pressure was observed in all categories of workers. It was higher in the inhabitants of Wroclaw, in persons with lower level of education and in manual workers. Similarly, BMI was also found higher; an average increase over 8 years was 2.0, and all of the analyzed groups showed overweight. This is particularly true for manual and less educated workers, who also had a greater number of leukocytes. Hemoglobin and hematocrit did not differ between the inv...

The influence of anthropometric characteristics on children's motor performance has been demonstrated by many authors who found significant correlations between anthropometric traits and motor abilities and motor skills of kindergarteners. The relationships between anthropometric characteristics and motor abilities are also evaluated and taken into account in the process of designing motor tests, but they were not analyzed with the use of the 8-s skipping with hand clapping (SHC) test performed by kindergarteners.

Most tests involve rowing ergometer training, stair climbing tests and repetitive jump tests on a dynamographic platform. The aim of the study was knowledge about sex differences in anthropometric traits, motor performance, and a decrease in power among university students performing extremely strenuous exercise during the 3-Minute Burpee Test (3-MBT). Material & Methods: The study involved 163 men and 196 women aged 19-22 (mean age 20.4 ±0.67 and 20.4 ±0.65 years, respectively) characterized by moderate levels of physical activity (mean: 1,148 and 998 METs, respectively). The participants’ body mass and height were measured, and the results were used to calculate their BMI scores. Endurance-strength abilities were evaluated during the 3-MBT. Sex differences in anthropometric characteristics and motor ...

To tackle students' physical inactivity, reforms in higher education were supposed to reinvent physical education (PE) programs, revise their objectives and tasks. Nevertheless, European universities are experiencing a physical activity crisis, and recent generations of students are facing health problems due to underprovided levels of PA. Objective: The aim of this descriptive study was to analyze the state and status of physical education in higher education in selected European countries with regards to its curriculum and resources. Methods: Quantitative data were collected from 66 tertiary institutions from various countries in Europe. The questionnaire was used to gather information regarding characteristics of tertiary institutions, sport and leisure facilities, types and characteristics of PA programs av...
