The paper deals with the significant impact of location on innovation activity that has been foun... more The paper deals with the significant impact of location on innovation activity that has been found in many empirical studies. Main elements of such an explanation are the specific problems of a division of innovative labor. Based on an outline of these issues the concept of a regional innovation system is presented in some detail and an overview of results from recent research on regional innovation systems is given. The paper then discusses basic policy options and names a number of important questions for further research.

This book takes an unfashionable perspective and shows that despite all the mistaken ideas and exaggerations, the technological changes of the 1990s still have important effects today. Economic history shows that technological revolutions tend to generate deep economic and social crises before a temporary state of equilibrium is reached. The established modes of accumulation and regimes of regulation of national capitalisms and international capitalism have been undermined by the collapse of the high tech asset bubble. Financial markets are still in disarray. What can be observed, however, is that some national economies are better positioned to tackle the crisis than others. Why is this? This and other important questions are tackled by an international team of contributors including Daniele Archibugi, Harald Hagemann, Bruno Amable, Martin Heidenreich and David Gibbs. This volume should be of great interest to all those working at the intersection of international politics and economics.

Seitdem das Memorandum im Krisenjahr 1975 erstmals Vorschläge für eine »alternative Wirtschaftspolitik« vorgelegt hatte, die sich in einen deutlichen Widerspruch nicht nur zu den von neoklassisch-konservativem Denken geprägten Empfehlungen des Sachverständigenrats, sondern auch zu der von der Schmidt-Regierung primär an Inflationsbekämpfung und Sicherung der internationalen Konkurrenzfähigkeit ausgerichteten Restriktionspolitik begaben, ist innerhalb der gewerkschaftsorientierten Linken eine lebhafte Debatte um die Möglichkeiten einer Veränderung der Wirtschaftspolitik im Interesse der lohnabhängigen Bevölkerung entflammt. Strauß gegenüber dem DGB rückte die Frage nach Stellung, Funktion und Ausgestaltung der Gewerkschaften innerhalb des politischen Systems der BRD in den Mittelpunkt der politischen Auseinandersetzungen. Mit der in den sogenannten „Stoiber-Papieren" zum Ausdruck kommenden Infragestellung der Einheitsgewerkschaft wurde offensichtlich, welchem politischen Druck die Gewerkschaften ausgesetzt sind (2). Daß diese politische Offensive des konservativen Blocks nicht lediglich ein wahltaktisches Manöver darstellt, sondern im Zusammenhang mit dem besonderen Charakter der ökonomischen Krise der siebziger Jahre zu interpretieren ist, soll in einem ersten Schritt der Analyse zu zeigen versucht werden. Agriculture definitely is at the top of developmental issues that must be solved if there is to b... more Agriculture definitely is at the top of developmental issues that must be solved if there is to be a future beyond Doha. A new global trade regime, however, needs to go beyond agriculture and deal with the pressing issues of a global economy characterized by unevenness and inequality. Such an agenda would have to simultaneously address the re-establishing of the principle of multilateralism that is endangered not only by regional agreements but also by the desire of non-governmental organizations fighting for labour and environmental standards.
