Patricia Spereman of the Sarnia Public Library in Sarnia, Ontario, was likely the first children&... more Patricia Spereman of the Sarnia Public Library in Sarnia, Ontario, was likely the first children's librarian in Canada. During her tenure (1904-1908), Sarnia Public Library demonstrated five elements characteristic of basic public library services for children: (1) a separate juvenile book collection; (2) a separate facility; (3) specialized staff; (4) reader services such as story hours; and (5) cooperation with other community agencies.

This study examined how human information behaviour researchers present research study participants through the following research questions: How do human information behaviour researchers describe participants in reports of empirical research?; and, What strategies do human information behaviour researchers use in their presentation of participants? Method and Analysis. A content analysis was conducted of 96 research reports published in the 1996-2004 ISIC proceedings. Articles were coded for data collection and data analysis methods, the use of theory, and parts of the article (title, abstract, literature search, method, findings, discussion and conclusion) where participants were included. Also noted were terms used to label research participants, data collection practices and strategies used by authors to present users. Results. Introduction. The purpose of this study was to determine if and how human information behaviour (... more Introduction. The purpose of this study was to determine if and how human information behaviour (HIB) research is used by others. Method. Using ISI Web of Knowledge, a citation analysis was conducted on 155 English-language HIB articles published from 1993 to 2000 in six prominent LIS journals. The bibliometric core of 12 papers was identified. Content analysis was performed on papers citing the core (n=377) to determine how the papers were cited. A domain visualization was constructed of the citing relationships within the entire corpus. Analysis. Citation analysis, content analysis and social network analysis were used to analyse the data. Results. HIB literature is being cited, primarily (81.5%) by LIS authors. Fields outside of LIS citing HIB articles include engineering, psychology, education and medicine. Bien que ce domaine d'etude ait ete aborde sous differents angles par la communaute scientifique, il n'y a eu jusqu'ici aucune synthese sur le statut de l'acces des enfants a l'information et aux services des bibliotheques publiques. Le but de cette etude etait de determiner comment le principe « d'egalite d'acces pour les mineurs » est reellement mis en application dans les bibliotheques publiques aujourd'hui. Dans cette etude, nous avons utilise comme source primaire de donnees les documents contenant les politiques generales des bibliotheques, car c'est dans ceux-ci que l'on retrouve les lignes directrices des services offerts. This paper summarizes and analyzes recent research related to «affective» issues in information b... more This paper summarizes and analyzes recent research related to «affective» issues in information behaviour and information retrieval, with a view to outlining practical implications for the design of usable information systems. The analysis is based on a systematic review of the recent research literature, both inside and outside of library and information science, which reports research findings related to issues of affect (emotion) in human information behaviour. The key conclusion is that information retrieval research and the design of systems for information retrieval must rest on an understanding of the users of those systems as complex human beings whose emotions affect their information retrieval as much (or perhaps more so) as their cognitive skills. These new understandings must focus on users’ personal perspectives of their information needs and the contexts of those needs, and thus on their affective motivations, in addition to their cognition.
