This paper examines the economic contribution of SHG women drawing on a field survey conducted in 20 villages by canvassing a structured schedule among 150 sample respondents of two blocks of Balasore district in Odisha, India. The findings show that women in SHG's have made a significantly positive contribution to employment, income, expenditure and saving at the household level. An increase in the demand for SHG products is required for improving productivity of women and enhancing their economic contribution in a sustainable way. A reorientation in policy is suggested for generating awareness, upgrading skills and expanding markets in order to augment their contribution and raise their empowerment level for the benefit of the households as well as for transforming the rural economy in a big way.

The handicrafts and cottage industries in the state made the foundation for spreading the craftsmanship of the state in different parts of the country. But the recent study shows these sectors are struggling for their survival. For the last five to six years the growth of handicrafts units are discouraging. In this paper an attempt is made to find out the problems and prospects of these sectors in present day context in Odisha. In our study we have taken three well known craft in the state, they are applique, filigree and pattachitra. We have taken two districts and three cluster regions for our study. We have used both primary and secondary data in the analysis. From our study we find, from 2009 there has been continuous fall in establishment of new handicraft, cottage and handicraft units in the state. The employment generated by these industries has also suffered. The study reveals problems are very common to a...

A substantial part of such migration takes place within the country. It involves the migration of the working-age population from the rural areas and agriculture to the urban non-farm sector and is motivated by a complex set of forces. This study examined the relevance of major strands of migration theory to the empirics of internal rural to urban migration of workforce from a coastal region of Odisha state, India. Micro-level evidence revealed that out-migration of the rural labour force was essentially selective, mainly determined by labour market conditions obtaining in the sending rural and receiving urban areas and motivated broadly on economic forces. Age, marital status, educational attainment, household size, ownership of agricultural land, income level of the migrants, migration networks, and contacts with previous migrants were crucial in influencing migration. The findings were suggested that migration was influenced by both "push" and "pull" factors, but "pull" factors were more pronounced and prominent than the "push" factor. Quite surprisingly and contrary to received wisdom, migration from the study area was not a survival strategy out of poverty for many of the migrants.

Low overall access to higher education, glaring spatial and social disparities in enrolment, weak infrastructure, poor quality of education and research, chronic faculty shortage and downsizing of state funding have been identified as the major challenges. Policy changes concerning higher education and the practice of pravatisation have complicated the problems rather than solving them. Active state participation, effective implementation of positive discrimination policies and ensuring accountability at all levels have been suggested to undo the damages done to higher education in the state.

On the basis of a sample survey of 200 households spread over six villages in three blocks of Kendrapara district in Odisha, India, this paper analyses the status of women and their increasing responsibility due to migration of the male working members. The results indicate higher responsibilities and greater empowerment of women because of absence of male members.

How does labour out migration impact on labour supply, wage rate, size and composition of costs, ... more How does labour out migration impact on labour supply, wage rate, size and composition of costs, productivity, production, cropping pattern and land use in agriculture? Putting in context the theoretical and empirical perspectives and using household survey data, this paper attempts to explain some of these issues. The results are more in agreement with market theory of wages than with the labour surplus and dual economy models. They indicate that migration has a strong bearing on agriculture and the labour-wage problems are likely to be more serious in future. Diversification favouring more land-intensive agricultural production, promoting location and small farm size specific technological innovations, a community approach to farm labour and a pragmatic redesigning and implementation of MNREGA and food security programmes can be helpful.

This paper outlines the recent developments in agricultural labour markets in rural odisha and investigates the issues of agricultural out migration and their implications for agriculture both from theoretical and empirical perspectives. The results indicate that migration does matter. It impacts on labour supply, real wage rate, productivity, output and cropping pattern in agriculture. The overall results contradict the prognosis of the surplus labour model and are consistent with the propositions of the market theory of wages as also with the findings of some of the earlier studies concerning other countries/areas.

Migration of adult household members can affect the education of the Children who are left behind in several ways. On the basis of a sample survey of 200 households spread over six villages in three blocks of Kendrapara district in Odisha, India, this paper analyses the educational status of the children left behind. The results indicate that migration matters for the education of children. It is evident from the study that enrolment-wise children of migrant households are ahead of those of returned migrant and non-migrant households, in the case of school attendance, continuation in education and educational attainment they lag behind the children in the latter two categories of household
