Two groups of weaned piglets (4 piglets per group) with an initial average weight of 15.5 ± 0.8 kg were fed for 35 days on a corn-soybean mealbased diet. The diets differed by the calcium source: calcium carbonate for the control, C group and calcium fructoborate for the experimental, E group. Serum Ca (mg/dL), determined in the end of the experiment didn't differ significantly (p≤ 0.05): 10.70 ± 0.6 (C) and 11.81 ± 0.8 (E). Femur and tibia dry matter, fat and ash didn't differ significantly (p≤ 0.05) between the two groups. The conclusion of the experiment is that calcium fructoborate is an alternative source of calcium, but it didn't improve calcium absorption in the bone. The experiment was conducted within CEEX project 110-NUTRIMINEROS.

The MMP-9 promoter -1562C/T functional polymorphism increases gene expression and was identified as a susceptibility factor for various cancers. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the MMP-9 promoter genotype on the risk of developing papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and to correlate cancer patient genotype with the clinical and pathological phenotype. METHODS: We evaluated 236 patients with nodular thyroid disease pre-thyroidectomy (119 benign disease, 117 PTC). Genomic DNA was isolated from whole blood and the MMP-9 -1562C/T genotype was evaluated by PCR-RFLP analysis. RESULTS: Genotype frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for all groups. The T allele was significantly more frequent in cancer compared to benign disease (17.5% vs 10.1%), p= 0.019. Patients with the CT or CT+TT genotype had an increased risk of developing PTC, specifically micropapillary thyroid carcinoma (MPTC) (CT genotype: OR = 6.467, p= 0.00006; CT+TT: OR = 6.859, p= 0.00002), but not more advanced stages (CT: p= 0.094; CT+TT: p= 0.157). The -1562C/T genotype did not significantly correlate with tumor histological subtype, invasion or TNM stage. CONCLUSION: The MMP-9 -1562C/T functional polymorphism may indicate susceptibility to develop thyroid cancer, specifically intrathyroidal clinically non-relevant MPTC. This suggests that although this genotype might be a predisposing factor, other genetic/epigenetic events are needed for cancer progression.

The detection of the free forms of testosterone in serum is rather challenging and several methods are available. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an automated competitive chemiluminescent immunoassay (IDS-iSYS) as compared to a radioimmunoassay (RIA) method.

In thyroid cancer expression levels correlate with aggressiveness but data on peripheral MMP-9 levels are less definitive. OBJECTIVE: Prospective study evaluating serum MMP-9 in the diagnosis and prognosis of papillary thyroid cancer. METHODS: Serum samples of MMP-9 were drawn before surgery in 185 consecutively enrolled patients with nodular thyroid disease, stratified on pathology as benign disease (N= 88) and papillary thyroid cancer (N= 97). Serum MMP-9 was measured by an immunometric assay. RESULTS: MMP-9 levels were not different between benign vs malignant pathology (p= 0.3). In papillary thyroid cancer there was no significant difference in MMP-9 levels between histologies, TNM stage and invasive/non-invasive cancers. High-risk patients with multiple features of aggressiveness had significantly higher MMP-9 levels compared to low-intermediate risk patients (767.5 ...

The study evaluated the day-night variations in urine both 6-sulfatoximelatonin (aMLT6S) and cortisol in healthy children and children with primary epilepsy in order to clarify the implications of circadian neuroendocrine axis. Study groups included 19 children with primary epilepsy and 17 healthy children. As expected a marked 24 h variation in hormone levels was found in the healthy group. In patients with epilepsy diurnal variation of hormone secretions were altered from the loss of circadian rhythm to an inversed one. In healthy children, 6-sulfatoximelatonin exhibited distinct diurnal variation with the nocturnal aMLT6s mean concentration of eight-time higher than the daytime mean. In children with primary epilepsy, there was a great individual variation in nocturnal aMLT6s excretion, from 9 to 218 ng/ml: six childr...

Research design and methods: This study included 20 boys (5-14 years) with GH deficit clinically established and a 10 matched normal group with no endocrine dysfunction. All of GH deficient patients underwent GH replacement therapy. In 2017, all subjects were tested by analytical methods for blood: HIST,GABA,DA,5-HT,IGF-1. Results: We divided this study group into a low HIST lot 1 (10 subjects): HIST median: 3.48 nM/L and a high HIST lot 2 (10 subjects): HIST median: 11nM/L. Median parameters in lot 1 vs. lot 2 were: 5-HT: 212.5 vs. 370ng/mL, DA: 30 vs. 45pg/ml, GABA: 30 vs. 56.5ng/mL, IGF-1: 373.5 vs. 200ng/mL. Median values in normal subjects were as it follows: HIST: 5.55nM/L; 5-HT: 235.5ng/mL; DA: 31.5pg/mL; GABA: 81ng /mL. T-Test rev...
