How does photography, which refers to the real, become a reality displaced from the one it refers to? Is it, after all, a simulation that precedes the real? What are the differences between analog and digital archive processing? And what are the consequences in contemporary art scene when we live in a world dominated by digital culture? Can the gathering between analog and digital processes give meaning to a new way of knowledge? How did scientific astronomy relate to artistic practice? These are some of the questions that we will then analyze and compare to the Vulcano project. The dissertation is divided into three distinct chapters: A first one is dedicated...

The empirical results revealed that the banks in Portugal and Spain have disclosed an average value of 0.2355 of information on intellectual capital through their webpages in 2016. Relational capital was the component these organizations most disclosed with an average of 0.4529, followed by the disclosure of structural capital, and lastly, human capital. The use of a particular index of disclosure about intellectual capital applied to the singularity of the banking sector that covers two peripheral countries in Southern Europe, reveal to be the most contribute to the literature.

Chips with different sizes and toast degrees were used. Compounds were extracted directly from the wood samples in order to determine possible differences among woods as well as toast degree. Likewise, the compounds were extracted from a synthetic wine solution to which the chip woods had been added. The results show that French wood chips are generally richer than the American ones. The total amount of phenolic compounds increases with toasting level, with the non-toasted chips being the poorest ones. The degree of extraction from the synthetic wine solution seems to be related to the shape of the chips, rather than to the wood type or toast degree.

Re... more The sweet cherry 'Sunburst' is highly appreciated by consumers due to its organoleptic traits. Regional producers tend to harvest cherries sooner in order to increase their profits. With the aim of understanding the consequences of this we have tested the effect of different ripeness stages at the moment of harvesting on fruit quality. Quality parameters tested included external colour (L*, a*, b*), fruit texture, total soluble solids (TSS), and titratable acidity (TA). To evaluate nutritional quality total antioxidant activity was measured too. Once again, and in agreement with results obtained in previous studies, we conclude that there is no advantage in picking less ripe cherries.

Different storage methods were tested to study the maintenance of quality during a period of 27 days: 1) cold (air at 1°C and 95% relative humidity) (CC), 2) cold and polypropylene film bags (1°C and 95% relative humidity) (MA) and 3) cold and controlled atmosphere (1°C, 95% RH, 10% CO 2 and 8% O 2) (CA). Quality parameters tested included external colour (L*, a*, b*), total soluble solids (TSS), and titratable acidity (TA). To evaluate nutritional quality anthocyanins, total antioxidant activity, and total phenolics were measured. Results allow us to say that phenolic compounds were relatively stable and similar during storage in CC and MA. Cherries stored under CA conditions presented lowest concentrations of phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds, total anthocyanins and antioxidant activity were inversely correlated with values of colour coordinates. Considering all the evaluations done during this work it is unquestionable that fruits stored in controlled atmosphere conditions had significantly different quality.

MLF was carried out in the Trincadeira wine variety in three batches: spontaneously and with inoculation of two different commercial starters. Wine extracts before and after MLF were obtained through liquid–liquid extraction. Gas chromatography/ion trap mass spectrometry analysis allowed the detection of 21 compounds, some of them tentatively identified through electron impact spectra comparison with a database, through interpretation of multistage mass spectrometry and chemical ionization mass spectrometry spectra and confirmation by comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography/ time of flight-mass spectrometry (GC ¥ GC/ToF-MS). After MLF, an increase in ethyl lactate, g-butyrolactone and diethyl succinate and a drop in isoamyl acetate, ethyl octanoate, ethyl de...

To achieve this goal, a preliminary evaluation of the molecular recognition and selectivity of the molecularly imprinted polymers has been performed. In order to investigate the complexity of the mechanistic basis for template selective recognition in these polymeric matrices, the use of a quantum chemical approach has been attempted providing new insights about the mechanisms underlying template recognition, and in particular the crucial role of the crosslinker agent and the solvent used. Thus, DFT calculations corroborate the results obtained by experimental molecular recognition assays enabling one to select the most suitable imprinting system for MISPE extraction technique which encompasses acrylamide as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as crosslinker. Furthermore, an analytical methodology comprising a sample preparation step based on solid phase extraction has been implemented using this "tailor made" imprinting system as sorbent, for the selective isolation/pre-concentration of deltamethrin from olive oil samples. Molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) methodology was successfully applied for the clean-up of spiked olive oil samples, with recovery rates up to 94%.

In the Knowledge Economy context this fundamental statement is still valid. Nevertheless, in this context, building excellent business formulas and first class business recipes require the contribution of intangibles as the key building blocks for gaining and sustaining competitive advantages. So, intangibles become the key ingredient to manage businesses in order to achieve entrepreneurial excellence. During the last decades many authors have written about the failure of traditional accounting systems to assist managers with the management of their organizations. The recognition of relevance of knowledge in the process of value creation has given rise to a variety of different approaches to the firm’s management. The literature refers to several models based ...
