The temperature impact on the inhibition mechanism of the synthesized inhibitors of the carbon steel surface was investigated at various temperatures (20–50 °C) where the inhibitive efficiency diminished with increasing temperatures. The maximum IE of 97.45% was achieved at a temperature of 20 °C, the concentration of BAPN inhibitor of 5×10-4 M, and H2SO4 acid concentration of 0.5 M. The adsorption of inhibitors studied onto the carbon steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The SEM surface analysis showed the formation of a protective organic film on the steel surface. The quantum chemical calculations (DFT) supported the experimental results and showed that the inhibition efficiency also depends on the structure of the inhibitor. Three inhibitors products based 2-Aminopyridine derivatives was studied on carbon steel in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. Results of weight loss measurements and scanning electron microscopy image analyses are reported. In addition, quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) were performed to estimate theoretically the reactivity parameters of the inhibitor.

Small amplitudes of vibration during the operation contributed to a surface degradation, mainly wear. A chromium-carbide based hard coating was deposited via plasma spray technique on the outer surface of a combustor liner of a gas turbine engine. It was found that after the operation, the coating hardness had increased more than 30% compared to its minimum initial hardness and reached up to 744 HV particularly in the crossfire tube collar mating areas. Comparison between the coated and the uncoated liners were carried out in order to show how much the wear scars have been minimized throughout the operation under severe temperature of approximately 1, 500°C. It was found that in this study the coating of chromium-carbide is capable to reduce the wear damage due to the work hardening effect of the liner and their mating surfaces.

In this study, Al2O3-13%TiO2 coated mild steel were prepared by using atmospheric plasma spray technology with different plasma power ranging from 25 kW to 40 kW. The as-sprayed coatings consist of γ-Al2O3 phase as the major phase and small amount of the titania phase existed in the coating structure. High degree of fully melted region was observed in the surface morphology for the coating sprayed with high plasma power, which lead to the high hardness and low percentage of porosity. In this study, nanoindentation test was carried out to investigate mechanical properties of the coating and the results showed that the coatings possess high elastic behaviour, which beneficial in engineering practice.

It was observed that the percentage of inhibition efficiency (η%) increased with increasing concentrations of inhibitor and temperature of test medium. The maximum η% approaches 85% in the presence of 200 mg litre-1 of inhibitors EPH and PPH at 308 ± 1K. The inhibitor efficiencies were found to be in the following order: PPH>EPH>PH. The adsorption of these inhibitors on mild steel surface obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. They act as mixed-type inhibitors. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) was also carried out on polished mild steel coupons and those immersed in the test medium with the absence and presence of 200 mg litre-1 of the inhibitors studied.

Through load interaction, load sequences can significantly affect fatigue life. The study on fatigue life under spectrum loading sequence is complex because it involves many interaction parameters. Therefore, the experimental and simulation findings of previous studies focusing on load sequence effects on fatigue life assessment are worthy of a review. The content of this review leads to a better understanding of the loading sequence effects on the fatigue life assessment and other possible interaction involvement.

In particular, it is not clear whether a work-hardened, a precipitation hardened or dispersion hardened matrix is optimum. Accordingly, the dry sliding wear behaviour of four aluminium alloys (A2124, A6092 (both precipitation hardened), A3004 (dispersion hardened) and A5056 (work hardened) was investigated against an M2 steel counterface in the load range 23-140N and at a fixed sliding speed of 1 ms-1. Severe wear was observed for all alloys, with domination of transfer of Fe from the counterface for all alloys, which resulted in the formation of a mechanically mixed layer. The relationship between alloy composition, deformation below worn surface and wear resistance is discussed.

Design/methodology/approach The methodology of this experiment is based on ASTM G73, which is for erosion test for rotating apparatus. Mild steels samples were coated with alumina titania via the plasma spray method, and surface modification was done by producing different dimple densities using laser surface texturing. Two mediums were used: seawater environment and slurry environment. Findings Dimples of 150 μm diameter and 50 μm depth have proved to be successful in entrapping wear debris and other foreign materials during the erosion test. It was clearly noted that coatings with the highest number of dimples with 43 per cent had significantly improved the microhardness of the coated mild steels by twofold. Originality/value All this while, texturing was done only on substrate material. None was done on ceramic coating.

Zirconia suspensions with 10 vol% powder loading were prepared with distilled water, and HNO 3 was used to adjust the pH of the suspension to pH 1-6. All of the suspensions were subjected to sedimentation test, and the results showed that the suspensions adjusted to pH 2 had the lowest sediment volume. This finding indicates that a suspension with pH 2 produces higher packing density. Viscosity test was carried out for the suspensions added with dispersant ranging from 0.3 wt% to 0.7 wt% polyethyleneimine (PEI) with and without pH adjustment. The suspension containing 0.5 wt% PEI with pH 2 adjustment produced the lowest viscosity because of interparticle bond breakage in the aggregates, thus forming colloidally stable suspensions. The zirconia suspension containing 0.5 wt% PEI and whose pH was adjusted to pH 2 was chosen to be slip casted into cylindrical shape. Green samples were sintered at various sintering temperatures that ranged from 1100 1C to 1500 1C through a two-step sintering method. The sample sintered at 1500 1C was found to be porosite-free, and its highest relative density was 99.6% of the theoretical density. Morphological studies detected pores in the microstructure of the samples sintered at low sintering temperatures (1100 and 1200 1C). By contrast, the samples sintered at 1400 and 1500 1C were fully densified. However, the grain size of the sample sintered at 1500 1C was 230 nm, which indicated excessive grain growth. The Vickers hardness of the sample sintered at 1400 1C was found to be highest (12.9 GPa) and comparable to results found in the literature.

Prior to the coating work, the nanopowders were subjected to a two-level factorial design of experiment to optimize the operational spray parameters, namely, the primary gas pressure, the carrier gas pressure, and the powder feed rate. These operational spray parameters potentially affect the following responses of the coatings: microhardness, wear rate, and surface roughness. The significant effect on surface roughness is due to the interaction factor with the carrier gas pressure. However, by changing the carrier gas pressure and the powder feed rate, an insignificant effect on the microhardness and wear rate is noted. In general, agglomerated Al 2 O 3-13%TiO 2 nanopowder-coated steels, with the lowest primary pressure of 40 psi, carrier gas pressure of 20 psi, and the highest powder feed rate of 3 rpm, are most preferred.

Inhomogeneous materials and manufacturing tolerances occurred in the modern manufacturing and mat... more Inhomogeneous materials and manufacturing tolerances occurred in the modern manufacturing and material processing sectors frequently lead to premature failures. During the operation of the components, multiaxial loadings and stresses suffered damage of the structural integrity severely. Therefore, this paper discusses the utilisations of several high cycle multiaxial fatigue criteria in the probabilistic design and analysis. The variations of material and geometrical properties are taken into account in order to study the probability of failure. High cycle multiaxial fatigue criteria are then used to determine the equivalent stress and the deflection. The implementations of these criteria were realised using Ansys Parametric Design Language (APDL) provided in the commercial software ANSYS. From the probabilistic results, von Mises criterion underestimated the probability of failure especially for displacement cases while high cycle multiaxial fatigue criteria, specifically Dang Van and Crossland criteria, are more sensitive than other criteria to predict the most significant random variables that affect the structural integrity. Therefore, the utilisation of high cycle multiaxial fatigue criteria in probabilistic analysis is of paramount importance to ensure the safety and reliability when compared to the traditional von Mises stress criteria.

They are useful due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, they are exposed to corrosion because the environment contains oxygen, humidity and some other factors. This paper describes about a paint incorporated with organic inhibitor, i.e., henna extract. This paint was produced to enhance its anticorrosive property. Henna extract was chosen as the corrosion inhibitor as it is organic, environmentally acceptable, readily available and a renewable source of material for a wide range of corrosion problems. The extractions were characterised by using Fourier Transform Infrared. Meanwhile, the inhibitive action of henna extract was investigated through an electrochemical technique. The inhibitive effects of henna extract were investigated with percentages of 0%, 4%, 8% and 10% incorporated into a rosin (epoxy)-based matrix. The specimens were characterised by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement. The morphology study was investigated through surface analysis by using scanning electron microscopy. The inhibition efficiency increased as the concentration of henna extract was increased. The results showed that Paint 3 has the lowest corrosion rate of 0.001767 mm/yr as compared to Paint 1 with 0.005148 mm/yr. The inhibitive action of the henna extract is discussed. Paint 3 was proposed as the most effective paint that contains a natural inhibitor for aluminium alloy.

The design of experiment method was applied to investigate the significant effects of each property and to optimize the operational spray parameters. Plasma power, powder feed rate, and stand-off distance were selected as independent variables. Agglomerated and sintered nano-TiO 2 powder was deposited on A-36 commercial mild steel. The microstructural and mechanical properties of the coatings such as porosity, microhardness, surface roughness, and wear rate were evaluated. Both plasma power and powder feed rate were found to be the main factors affecting all four responses. It was also noted that the stand-off distance was a significant factor mainly in influencing the surface roughness of the coatings. All in all, the optimized properties can be achieved by applying a plasma power of 30 KW (high level), a powder feed rate of 22 g/min (high level), and a stand-off distance of 80 mm (low level).

The formation of a specific patterned surface can be achieved through abrasive blasting, reactive-ion etching, lithography and mechanical machining. This review focuses on laser technology because it generates the most controllable and precise geometries. This technique is environmentally friendly because it does not utilise any chemical reagent, nor does it produce significant waste.
