African countries initiated various missions to establish sustained economic growth by increasing productivity with an ultimate goal of poverty reduction. The significance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in poverty reduction and employment generation is widely acknowledged. Despite the high failure rate amongst SMEs, particularly in the African context, some are striving with excellent results and are demonstrating signs of growth, innovation and sustainability. This paper explores the development of SMEs as a strategic measure for job creation in sub-Saharan Africa. It examines the role of SMEs in achieving sustainable employment in Africa. This study will benefit governments in Africa, getting them to focus on the development of the SMEs, and guiding them on how best to integrate SME development to achieve poverty alleviation. The recommendations proposed in this study may be helpful in policy formulation, business operation and regulatory practice for sustainable growth and development in the sub-Saharan African context.

In this context, there is the need for the government to create a support mechanism to help integrate young people into the job market, through the handicraft Entrepreneurship. The objective of this study is to examine job creation, income generation and poverty alleviation opportunities in developing the microenterprise-handcraft linkage, with special attention to vulnerable sectors of society, the youths. However, the handicraft sector is performing at a level far below its potential in South Africa. This research study into the reasons behind such weak performance, its developmental aspects, and different implication shall be suggested on the contribution of handicrafts in eradicating poverty and maintaining a sustainable livelihood for the youths. The paper shows key findings from a literature review and from semi-structured interviews with local producers, supporters, and buyers of handicraft products in the Western Cape Province. The methodology used for this research is an exploratory approach using a qualitative data collection method. Finally, the study provides a comprehensive strategy on how to enhance the South African handicraft sector to better meet its needs as a micro-enterprise to create a better living for the people.

There is no perfect process, and any process at a later stage will need to be improved to keep up with the time and the technology. Business Process Management (BPM) is essential for any process for the management, monitoring and improvement of the developed process. There are different types of business process management models that one could adopt for process enhancement. Drone approval process in South Africa has challenges regarding the implemented processes of the drone regulation. Challenges involve delays and there is a call by the drone industry to amend the regulation. This study explores six core elements and life cycle business process management models. The two BPM models were used to guide the development of the business process model to help improve the drone regulation in process in South Africa.

The complex jewellery designs are complicated to be produced by hand, considering the international demand and dynamics in the jewellery industry. However, advanced production processes and 3D printers are changing the way jewellery designers and manufacturers work and making it easier to produce quality products with fewer production and labour input hours. This study examines the investment casting process of 3D printed design as an option for jewellery manufacturing. The research aims to access jewellery manufacturing processes and its technology application by using trending 3D printing as a rapid prototype. It used the design and production process of 'OneCent Africa' as a case study to describe the process in the investment casting of jewellery products. The investment casting was conducted by prototyping, and the lost wax jewellery casting stages using the vacuum casting machines and burnout oven, with the casting process monitored in parts. This research results led to a better understanding of the experimental casting outcomes and described the potential for the future technological development of jewellery businesses.
