Miniaturized stepped impedance lowpass filters employing defected ground substrates (DGS) are pro... more Miniaturized stepped impedance lowpass filters employing defected ground substrates (DGS) are proposed for IEEE 802.16a applications. The DGS slots are applied to the high impedance sections of the lowpass filter increasing the effective inductance of the circuit. A suitable combination of DGS slot, high impedance line and step discontinuity bring about an increase in the series inductance and result in a reduction in the filter length. The proposed model is validated by fabricating a lowpass filter for a cut-off frequency of 1.35 GHz on a glass epoxy substrate. The filter shows an insertion loss of around 0.5 dB and a return loss of around 20 dB in the desired cut-off frequency.

Three fringe photoelasticity (TFP) can give the total fringe order from a single colour isochroma... more Three fringe photoelasticity (TFP) can give the total fringe order from a single colour isochromatic fringe field by suitably comparing the colour with a calibration specimen. The fringe order evaluation can be erroneous when the materials for the calibration specimen and the application specimen are different. This is because of the colour variation between the two materials. This is conventionally handled by preparing individual calibration tables for each application. A new methodology to tune the calibration table obtained for a single material to accommodate the tint variation in TFP is proposed for the use of different specimen materials. Discontinuities in fringe order variation are smoothed using the refined TFP (RTFP) procedure. The elegance of the new methodology for solving a multi-material system is bought out by solving the problem of a bi-material Brazilian disc. The results obtained are compared with the phase shifting technique.
Probability analysis is commonly used to estimate the structural damage subjected to the static l... more Probability analysis is commonly used to estimate the structural damage subjected to the static loads as well as dynamic loads such as earthquakes, wind and blast loads. Blast loads is difficult to predict accurately due to the parameters that influence the uncertainty in the blast shock wave propagation and shock wave-structures interaction. However, probability analysis of the structural damage can be carried out by considering all the blast load parameters and the structural properties. Instead, scale distance factors (producing various pressures and impulses) also affect the uncertainty of variations in structure damage to blast load and analysis of blast-resistant design. This study presents a reliability analysis of unstrengthened and FRP strengthened RC columns to blast loads. Three different parameter examples of unstrengthened reinforced concrete (RC) columns and Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strengthened RC column are used. The failure probabilities of RC columns under different level blast load corresponding to different range of scaled distances are estimated and presented. The results indicate reliability analysis gives range of scaled distances with different probabilities of column collapse.
