Civil engineering professionals are extensively involved in different infrastructure development activities. The objective of this study was to assess the adoption of innovative behavior, using the diffusion of innovation theory (DOI). Civil Engineering degree and diploma graduates who had not yet started their professional careers were selected for the study. A trend analysis was conducted from the data and Rogers’ classes of the adopters were isolated, which fell in four groups. The results showed that DOI can be applied to evaluate adoption levels of different groups of adopters. The study also established the procedure for the trend analysis of data that allows deriving meaningful inferences from the composite intelligence of groups and grades/levels of adoptions within the sub groups. The procedure and steps devised in this study are also applicable for assessing the adoption of innovations for human resources management and extension methods applied are useful for imparting lessons on innovations.

The evaluation covered all the vaccines viz., BCG, DPT, OPV and Measles for children and TT for pregnant women. The survey revealed that the immunization programme could touch about 96 per cent of target children and about 93 per cent of pregnant women. About 83 per cent of children received all the vaccines (BCG, DPT, OPV and Measles) and 93 per cent of pregnant women received at least one ANC and 91 per cent received TT2/Booster. It has been observed that coverage was low among children belonging to Muslims, scheduled caste/tribes, illiterate parents and low socio-economic status. The literacy of mother is the key to the success of the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). He...

Design : Two stage design was adopted with Probability Proportion to Size (PPS) Sampling. The study covered seven districts in the state. About 1400 children (between 1-2 age groups) and mothers (children up one year of age) were studied. Detailed information about the immunization status of different vaccines of children and on Tetanus Toxoid ANC about pregnant women were collected. It has been observed that about 61 percent children received all the vaccines (BCG DPT OPV Measles) as against about 63 per cent at all India level. Further only 42 per cent of pregnant women received full package of ANC i.e. minimum three ANC visits TT2/Booster and IFA tablets. Coverage levels were one of the lowest as compared to other states. The coverage levels were also lower for children of illiterate mothers and in inaccessible villages. Improvement could be achieved by improving IEC activities specially among females as well as making this programme success by putting all efforts in the case of Pulse Polio. (authors)

The problem of gully erosion is very severe in the riparian areas of the alluvial deep soil regio... more The problem of gully erosion is very severe in the riparian areas of the alluvial deep soil region in India. Research and development have progressed in response to the change in social needs. The earlier strategy of maintenance of law and order has changed to one of reclamation and restoration of the productive capacity of riparian areas. Watershed management in the ravines has been adopted for development of food security, eco‐restoration and pollution control. Case studies on the watershed management in watersheds projects initiated in the mid‐1980s revealed the scope for bringing increased prosperity through crop diversification and eco‐restoration. In consideration of the erosion process, new concepts of management zones and improved conservation and reclamation practices have been developed. The sociological factors have been rationally analysed, as they applied to watershed management in the ravines. A new paradigm of watershed management by group action is necessary in the f...
