This essay recounts the circumstances that provoked and influenced earlier research and publicati... more This essay recounts the circumstances that provoked and influenced earlier research and publications on entrepreneurship by Hebert and Link (1982, 1988, 1989a, 1989b, 2006a, 2006b, 2009). Once a dark corner of economics, the study of entrepreneurship has enjoyed some light as the scholarship has matured, and the boundaries of entrepreneurship research have expanded. Challenges remain, however. The field still suffers from conjecture and confusion, and even the definition of entrepreneur has escaped consensus. Whatever direction future research takes, entrepreneurship must be recognized as an inherently decentralized activity: disruptive, contrarian, and incompatible with central planning.

Working with the classical expressions of demand, supply and market adjustments, the French engin... more Working with the classical expressions of demand, supply and market adjustments, the French engineer Jules Dupuit developed a model of competitive market adjustments in different time dimensions that anticipated Marshall's 'period analysis' on all important points. Dupuit's attempt to handle the complexity of economic phenomena in a scientific fashion, by utilizing the ceteris paribus method, and the integration of this method with the 'facts' of production in a 'typical' industry, generated a huge payoff for subsequent generations of economists. The payoff was enhanced by Marshall's refinements, and realized by Marshall's teaching, which took root in so many able students and disciples. Marshall was less than generous to all those whose contributions were closely related to his own. .. Dupuit [for one]. .. received but footnote recognition and this not in the right places.

The exact starting and ending dates of the Middle Ages may be difficult to specify, but historian... more The exact starting and ending dates of the Middle Ages may be difficult to specify, but historians are virtually unanimous that the period, however demarcated, represented the high tide of Christianity in Western Europe. Medieval Europe provides an interesting case study, not only of religion and politics, but of the overlap between them, which was far greater in medieval society than it is today. The medieval Roman Catholic Church, as an economic and political entity, attempted to accomplish its otherworldly goals in this world by acquiring power and influence. Most large corporations need access to capital markets to grow and prosper. The medieval Church was no exception, but it was constrained by its own admonitions against “laying up earthly treasure” and “serving Mammon instead of God.” This article discusses the political economy of the medieval Church, focusing on its response to the Crusades and also considering purgatory, indulgences, and the Protestant Reformation, as well as marriage as a sacrament.
