As shapes are projected onto the floor, players recreate those shapes on a 6x6 feet interactive mat. At the end of each level, a geometric pattern - the result of overlaying all created shapes - is displayed. Two dimensions of user interaction-mobility and division of labor-emerged during pilot gameplay sessions. We hypothesize that these interactions offer resources for children to learn geometry concepts as well as collaboration skills.
This work explores the ways children learn mathematics through playing with coding (programming) ... more This work explores the ways children learn mathematics through playing with coding (programming) and a robot in a preschool setting after a teacher expressed interest in robot coding at a summer institute. Drawing on the importance of learning mathematics through play in early childhood, this paper examines the affordances and constraints of implementing robot coding in a preschool setting across two initial screen-less coding sessions with the robot. Our findings suggest that children were challenged to connect the symbolic markers with the robot’s movement, requiring teacher scaffolding and facilitation. Nonetheless, we argue that coding experiences can support preschool mathematics learning outside of traditional pathways.
Many satellite communication (SATCOM) systems currently use a static resource allocation scheme, ... more Many satellite communication (SATCOM) systems currently use a static resource allocation scheme, which is known to provide excellent service to high-priority jobs. However, this static allocation method is inefficient, as it makes valuable network resources inaccessible to low-priority jobs even when resources are available. We developed stochastic models that approximate the SATCOM systems and studied their statistical properties. We began by reviewing the standard M/M/m model from classic queueing theory and used Markov chains to extend the classic models to include multi-class jobs, more suitably approximating SATCOM systems. Then, by way of simulation, we isolated and characterized the system’s key performance trends in terms of its statistical characteristics. Properties under consideration include the probability of call blocking, preemption, satisfaction, and the expected server utilization, all as a function of priority and bandwidth.

As shapes are projected onto the floor, players recreate those shapes on a 6x6ft interactive mat. At the end of each level, a geometric pattern - the result of overlaying all created shapes Is displayed. In this paper, we share the hardware and software development work behind our functional prototype. We also share feedback from pilot testing sessions. We seek to continue refining Geometris to meet the needs of young mathematics learners
