We analyze 51 Spanish financial entities for the period 2008-2012. The results show higher solvency and efficiency of banks over savings banks. On the other hand, after the first integrations it is observed that it is still early for these ratios to improve on the results obtained by the entities before the integrations. However, from the financial point of view, these integrations do explain how correct the start-up and intensification of the restructuring processes were. There are some exceptions to the global criteria, which are explained by the size, strength and structure of the business and the closeness of its financial management scope to the area and business structure of the bigger banking groups.

A binomial option tree is first constructed in Excel using standard spreadsheet 'cut and paste' operations. The same binomial tree is then constructed in Mathcad. We conclude that spreadsheet construction of the tree provides students with a sound concept of the underlying mechanics of the option tree. Additionally, the Mathcad construction reinforces the mathematical notation found in many option pricing texts (e.g. summation signs and indices) and allows for the construction of a more flexible lattice that may be easily altered (e.g. the number of steps). In the process students are provided with an understanding of how to construct option trees in the increasingly important world of computer algebra packages. I In nt tr ro od du uc ct ti io on n This paper shows how the computer algebra package 'Mathcad' can be used to complement the spreadsheet (Excel) construction of a binomial option tree. We first describe the basic option problem under consideration and construct a basic binomial tree with Excel. We then construct the same tree with Mathcad. The construction of binomial trees in Excel is performed through the common 'cut and paste' operations shown in many texts (e.g. Benninga, 1998). However, the Mathcad program is constructed using the mathematical symbols found in many financial derivative texts. As a result, Mathcad construction reinforces the mathematical notation underlying binomial option pricing and introduces the programming concepts of computer algebra packages. Also, the Mathcad program incorporates a high degree of flexibility, which allows students easily to examine how increases in the number of steps affect the option price and how the binomial price may converge to the Black and Scholes model price. The use of Mathcad is most appropriate for advanced undergraduates or graduates who have constructed option trees in a spreadsheet environment but who wish to extend their programming skills to the more powerful computer algebra packages increasingly used by financial institutions. In this spirit it is also shown that every compact group contains a non-Borel subgroup.

The first option uses an extractive distillation column and the other two options use thermally coupled extractive distillation sequences. The results indicate that the fully thermally coupled extractive option can reduce energy consumption by ca. 30 % compared to the scheme that uses an extractive distillation column. This fully thermally coupled extractive distillation sequence can produce ethanol as distillate with a mass fraction of 0.995, the entrainer as the bottoms product and a mixture of ethanol and water as the sidestream.

We look at the representation of linear bijections H : A −→ B by continuous functions h : Y −→ X as weighted composition operators. In order to do it, we extend the notion of Hamming metric to infinite spaces. Our main result establishes that under some mild conditions, every Hamming isometry can be represented as a weighted composition operator. Connections to coding theory are also highlighted.
