Consumption of photovoltaic solar panels is expected to increase, so the growing amount of end-of... more Consumption of photovoltaic solar panels is expected to increase, so the growing amount of end-of-life (EOL) solar panels will require large spaces for their disposal, which at the moment costs around 200 euros/ton. Thus, a proper treatment technique to recover secondary materials from this waste, which are mainly copper, aluminum, silicon, high-transmittance glass, and plastics, must be developed. The last three components are strongly attached to each other; hence, their detachment is necessary for recovery. To achieve this objective, a chemical route was chosen; in fact, solvent extraction is highly recommended, as it has a high separation efficiency. In this study, D-limonene as a bio-solvent was examined for detaching different components of solar panels from each other. The effectiveness of nano-silica (NS) in preventing deleterious expansion associated with alkali-... more The effectiveness of nano-silica (NS) in preventing deleterious expansion associated with alkali-silica reaction (ASR) was assessed using concrete mixes made with two siliceous aggregates of different alkali-reactivity. Concrete mixes were also made using condensed silica fume as a reference mineral admixture. Two different expansion tests were used: the accelerated expansion test at 60°C and 100% RH and the ultra-accelerated expansion test in alkaline solutions at 150°C. Irrespective of the expansion test used, nano-silica proves to be effective as an ASR inhibitor only when the driving force for ASR expansion, represented by the difference between the alkali content, Lac, of the concrete and the Threshold Alkali Level, TAL, of the aggregate, does not exceed 1.2 kg Na2Oeq/m3. Conversely, condensed silica fume is always effective at least up to the ASR driving force of 2.2 kg Na2Oeq/m3, and no counterproductive effect on ASR prevention is observed

Fly ashes from co-fired woody biomass (virgin wood chips) and peat combustion were considered for... more Fly ashes from co-fired woody biomass (virgin wood chips) and peat combustion were considered for their use as cement replacement in cementitious mixes. The objective of this work was to investigate the effects of two additions (15 and 30 wt.% of binder) on the flow and rheological properties, setting, and compressive strength of such mixes. The effectiveness of a water-washing pre-treatment of fly ashes was also ascertained. The preliminary results obtained showed that the studied fuel ash may be used as a mineral addition in cementitious mixes. It produces a remarkable increase in the water demand but does not adversely affect cement setting and strength development in the case of superplasticized cement mixes. The washing pre-treatment of raw fly ash is able to reduce or eliminate its adverse effect on the flow and rheological property, but it does not significantly modify the mechanical strength development

An experimental procedure was developed and applied to cement pastes made with two different pozz... more An experimental procedure was developed and applied to cement pastes made with two different pozzolanic cements (CEM IV/B (P) and CEM IV/B (V)) in order to ascertain the existence of a residual capability of alkali binding by long-term hydrated pozzolanic cements and, at the same time, to evaluate the alkali retention capability and the concentration of OH− ions in the pore solution of such cementitious matrices. The developed procedure consisted of accelerated curing of cement paste specimens (150 days at 60°C and 100% RH), subsequent leaching tests at 60°C for 30 days by using deionized water or basic solutions (NaOH or KOH at different concentrations) as leaching media, and correlation of the leaching test results with a simple mass balance equation for sodium and potassium ions. This model is based on some composition and reactivity parameters related to ASR, including the long-term alkali contribution by aggregates to concrete structures. This alkali contribution was estimated by means of a laboratory extraction test, appositely developed in this study in order to maximize the alkali extraction within relatively short testing times and with low leaching solution/aggregate ratios. The proposed test is a modification of the Italian Standard test method UNI 11417-2 (Ente Nazionale Italiano di Normazione) and it consists of subjecting an aggregate sample to leaching with saturated calcium hydroxide solution in a laboratory autoclave at 105 °C. In this test, concrete prisms with a standardized mix composition and different alkali contents are immersed in alkaline solutions with compositions simulating the pore liquid of hardened concretes. The concrete prism expansion test at 38 °C and RH > 95% (traditional CPT) was taken as a reference test, in order to define the appropriate expansion limit criterion for the proposed accelerated CPT.
