Using a semi-structured interview technique to collect data and a technique based in grounded theory to analyze this data, the purpose of this study was to discern the meaning of disclosure for college students with disabilities in relation to the strategies they invoke while seeking accommodations. The study revealed three underlying themes common to the accommodation-seeking strategies of the participants who were academically successful college students with disabilities. These themes include: scripting disclosure of one's disability; negotiating accommodations with faculty; and downplaying one's disability status.

A total of 170 Chinese international students participated in this study. Bivariate correlation analyses revealed that an individual can identify with two different cultures, minority and dominant culture. Results of multiple regression indicated that cultural assimilation was a significant predictor to psychological well-being, but not cultural maintenance. The study also found that younger Chinese international students (e.g., students pursuing bachelor’s degrees) suffered significantly higher levels of stress and depression in the acculturation process as compared to their older counterparts. Implications for counseling and recommendations for future research were discussed.

Data used in this study were drawn from Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies US data which includes 5010 completed cases and a total of 1326 variables. The assessment of literacy, numeracy and problem-solving competencies were administrated using computer-based approaches. The result of the study showed that adults with higher numeracy and literacy competencies were more likely to have higher level of problem-solving skills. The results of the analyses also revealed that solution latency (i.e. time) were an important factor influencing problem-solving skills. This study indicates that basic mathematical skills are essential for solving problems that require interpersonal communication, computer and software knowledge, planning, and organising. The findings from this study provide several implications for researchers, educators, teachers and policymakers.

In the current study, we examined whether self-regulatory learning behaviors may be considered as mediating the relationship between student perceptions of online course communication and collaboration with academic achievement as measured by grade point average (GPA). Results indicate that online self-regulatory learning behaviors, though not strongly associated with academic achievement in and of themselves, do mediate the positive relationship between student perceptions of online course communication and collaboration with academic achievement.
The purpose of this article was to measure American non-history major students' history inter... more The purpose of this article was to measure American non-history major students' history interests and compare their interest levels based on major, ethnicity, degree (undergraduate and graduate), age, and gender. We developed the history interest inventory for college students to measure their interest levels on the general history interest, the positive feeling, and value. Results indicated that American students showed their interest in history in general sense, but on the positive feeling to history, about 23.0% of students were not interested. Interest differences have been found based on major, age, and gender. Some suggestions were made on how to increase students' interest in history. ********** The application of historical knowledge exists everywhere, from humanities to scientific studies. In college, history is learned in both history and non-history majors. This study was an attempt to measure American non-history major students' history interests and compare their interest levels across groups of major, ethnicity, degree (undergraduate and graduate), age, and gender. Interest in a domain has a powerful facilitative effect on students' learning and achievement. Understanding what levels of history interest brought to the classroom by students enables educators to better plan for interventions and learning activities. "Interest" refers to people's liking and willful engagement in an activity (Schunk, Pintrinch, and Meece, 2008, p. 210). It is an interactive relationship between individuals and environments, relating to specific topics, tasks, or activities (Hidi & Harackiewicz 2000; Schiefele, 1991). Researchers commonly distinguish between situational interest and individual interest. The former refers to a temporary, situation-specific attention, and the latter represents a relatively stable disposition. Both of them influence students' cognition and achievement (Krapp, Hidi, & Renninger, 1992). Studies have indicated that students' high interest levels in a domain facilitate their comprehension, learning strategies, achievement, and involvement (Stevens, 1980; Schiefele, 1991, 1992; Ainley, Hidi, & Berndorff, 2002; Corbiere, Fraccaroli, Mbekou, & Perron, 2006). Schiefele, Krapp, and Winteler (1992) did a meta-analysis of researches (from 1965 to 1984) on the relationship between students' interest and their academic achievement. They reported that for the subject area (excluding biology and literature), the correlation coefficients are above .30, explaining about 9% of the variance. There was a significant difference between male and female students: interest explained 12% of the variance for males, but only 6% of the variance for females. Both situational and individual interests were defined as multidimentional constructs (Schiefele, 1991; Chen, Darst, & Pangrazi, 1999; Hidi and Harackiewicz, 2000; Weber & Patterson, 2001). The specific components vary depending on different theories and inventories. For the individual interest to which the history interest belongs, Schiefele (1991) adopted two components: feeling-related and value-related valences. Feeling-related valence refers to an association with a topic or a topic related activity with the positive feeling, especially enjoyment and involvement, and value-related valence refers to the attribution of personal significance to a subject. Hidi and Harackiewicz (2000) adopted three components--value, the positive feeling, and knowledge. They believed that increased knowledge also raises people's attention to an activity or subject. In examining American college students' history interest (non-history major), this research focused on the following questions: what were history interest levels of American college students? Were there group differences based on major, ethnicity, degree (undergraduate and graduate), age, and gender? Method Participants Two hundred and sixty-five college students from a variety of majors at a university in West Texas participated in the survey with paper and pencil in class or online. …

Of the 51 elementary school teachers who participated in the study, 25 were from a school undergoing comprehensive reform, and 26 were from a school employing traditional grade-level classrooms and teaching strategies. Each participant completed pretest and posttest instruments. In addition, there were two treatment groups, either cognitive behavioral/music therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy. Results of the study indicated that teachers who participated in school-based counseling groups, using music therapy techniques in conjunction with cognitive behavioral interventions, reported lower levels of burnout symptoms than teachers in school-based counseling groups using cognitive behavioral interventions only. Implications for mental health counseling are discussed.

Part of the difficulty learners experience within current network applications is a lack of support from the design of the software for the development of a common ground. This paper reports on a study of how a group of online students used a software application specifically designed to mediate a threaded discussion. Results of the study show that properly designed software had a significant impact on the creation and maintenance of the common ground necessary to create and foster a community of talk. Nonetheless, the data also shows that specialized software is not enough. An important factor in using online interaction well is for the teacher to closely monitor students online. These two factors, suitably designed software that is appropriately implemented, are closely related and will result in optimum experience for students.

A dramatic expansion of knowledge is expected that could lead to new technologies to address global problems. However, knowledge generation is challenging traditional education that focuses on transmission from teacher to students. Information technology can improve engineering education in three important ways: • multimedia instruction • virtual team projects • class management tools. Perhaps the most important factor in educating engineers to meet challenges to sustainability is the development of the professional engineering educator, an instructor who is able to adopt the latest computer-based instructional technology.

Students' evaluation of their instructors and the course and their experiences with technology problems when taking the course were measured. As expected, a negative correlation between teaching evaluation and experience of technology problems was observed. Based on the finding, it is suggested that, to encourage faculty members to teach online, universities need to examine the relationship between teaching evaluation and technology problems experienced by students in the online environment and adjust the evaluation skewed by problems that are out of instructors' control. Measurement instruments used in the study and a suggested formula for adjusting teaching evaluation are provided.

The purpose of the current study was to examine whether the conceptual framework of epistemological beliefs may be considered statistically similar or invariant across a sample of experts and non-experts within a university context. To achieve the purpose of this study, multi-group structural equation models were examined. Results suggest support for the five-dimension structure of epistemological beliefs across both experts and non-experts and indicate experts as having statistically significantly higher overall epistemological beliefs as measured within this university context.
