The main objective of this study was to identify the impact of microcredit on selected livelihood assets of microcredit participant households. Both primary and secondary data were collected and used for this study. The primary data were collected from randomly selected 110 microcredit participant households who have at least three years of participation status in Omo Microfinance Institution and 120 non-participant households who hadn't ever accessed loan from Omo Microfinance Institution. Secondary data were collected from review of different related literatures. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the collected data. The result of descriptive statistics showed that, microcredit participants use loan for different livelihood activities, such as financing agricultural activities, food preparation and sell, cloth trading, supply of local construction material (Atena), shop keeping and petty trade. Fear of risk of default, interest rate, transaction cost related with accessing loan, repayment policy, compulsory saving and group lending approach were the main factors affecting microcredit participation in the study area. The result of PSM analysis indicated that microcredit participation has a positive and significant impact on average annual income, saving, physical asset and children schooling of households. The sensitivity analysis result showed that the impact results estimated by this study are insensitive to unobserved selection bias. Therefore, Omo Microfinance Institution, other governmental and nongovernmental organizations should expand access of credit to rural households in poverty reduction strategies.

Data were collected from randomly selected 194 households. Outcomes of the FTC based training on maize, haricot bean and coffee productivity was analyzed using t-test whereas binary logistic regression model was used to identify factors determining farmers' participation in FTC based training. The result showed that education, land size, contact with development agent, access to road, wealth status and livestock holding of the household positively determine households' decision to participate whereas distance from FTC negatively determines households' decision to participate. There was positive outcome of the FTC based training on maize, haricot bean and coffee productivity. The study recommends that governmental, public and private sectors should expand access to education, access to road and strength linkage between famers and agricultural development agents.

Among the cereals, it is ranked in fifth place and the most important crop next to teff, sorghum, and wheat in the country. Different works of literature highlight that engagement in contract farming is one of the innovations promoted to tackle technology constraints of the smallholder farmers, as a possible solution to raising productivity and linking smallholders in the emerging modern marketing chains. Associated with the rapid rate of urbanization in the country, there is a high demand for malt barley which is resulting high expansion of beer factories. Consequently, in the study area, many farmers got into a contract agreement with Assela malt barley factories. Recent studies conducted on malt barley in Ethiopia gave much emphasis to the value chain aspect of malt barley. Therefore, the main motive behind this study was to fill the empirical literature gap in the field by giving much emphasis o...

Farmer perception tends to influence their coping and adaptation strategies. This review aimed to examine the contributions of studies on farmer perceptions to climate change through a systematically review of the scientific literature. The search strategy was adapted to the Scopus database using the search terms "Farmers’ perception” AND “climate change.” The selection criteria were based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analyses approach. The review was conducted based on 48 peer-reviewed articles, selected after evaluating each article against inclusion and exclusion criteria. Key findings from the data showed that participants were aware of the climate's changing in 81.25% of the articles reviewed. The review results also identified limitations highlighting the gaps in the existing literature regarding the aims and scope of the journals and the methods used in the articles.

This study examined the impact of formal microcredit on income of borrowers in the rural areas of Sidama Region, Ethiopia. Data was collected from 456 sampled rural households consisting of 200 borrowers and 256 non-borrowers. This study applied propensity score matching (PSM) model to analyze the impact of microcredit on income of the borrowers. The result of this analysis indicates that microcredit had a positive and significant impact on the income of the borrowers. The sensitivity analysis result showed that the impact result estimated by this study is insensitive to unobserved selection bias and it is a true impact of formal microcredit. Therefore, microfinance institutions, other governmental, and nongovernmental organizations working in credit provision should expand access to credit to rural households in poverty reduction strategies.

To carry out this study both primary and secondary data was collected and analyzed. Randomly selected 161 households were the source of primary data for this study. Secondary data was collected from the review of related works of literature. A binary logistic regression econometric model was implemented to identify major determinants of women's participation in income-generating activities. Women in the study area are not allowed by their husbands to participate in high-income earning activities. They are considered as a housewife and the only husband is expected to participate in high income-generating activities due to the local customs. As a result, some women participate in small business activities like livestock product sales, vegetable and fruit sell, poultry, petty trade, hairdressing, ...

The wheat sub-sector is strategic for the Government of Ethiopia, where wheat has several food uses which can be prepared in modern or culturally processed techniques. Crop production and productivity including wheat is a function of all the recommended technology packages not only variety. Adoption of all recommended production technologies play a significant role in improving wheat production and productivity which in turn has clear implication on food security of Ethiopia and welfare of the farmers. Recent studies conducted focused on adoption of only single technology, primarily variety adoption, without considering its associated production technologies. Therefore, this study attempts to identify the major factors determining adoption of improved wheat (Shorma, Degelu, Danda and Kakawa) production technologies in Gorche district, Ethiopia. Energy conversions are carried out in open fires using inefficient traditional stoves, results in poor quality of life due to smoking-related health outcomes, and consume a large quantity of wood. This resulted in increased costs of health and cutting trees which facilities climate change. To change the situation, improved cooking stoves (ICS) have been introduced through youth cooperatives in the study area. Objective The study examined the major sources of energy for the rural households, evaluate the health and related benefits of using improved cook stove and assessing the determinants for its adoption.MethodData were collected from 344 households using a questionnaire in supplement with interview schedule. Though there are a lot of households using irrigation in the study area, the impact that it has brought on the food security of the household is not yet well studied in the area. Several related studies reviewed lack appropriate impact evaluation methods in studying the impact of small-scale irrigation on food security that may result in overestimation or underestimation of the impact. To this end, the main motivation behind this study was to examine whether small-scale irrigation in the study area is creating positive change on household food security or not using the propensity score matching approach. Methodology Both primary and secondary data were collected and used in the study. The primary data were collected from randomly selected 94 irrigation users ...
