The Peruvian Amazon rainforest has a great variety of flora, such as monocots (Dracontium loretense Krause and Commelina diffusa) and dicotyledons (Dysphania ambrosioides, Malva sylvestris, Origanum vulgare, Bixa orellana, Pinus edulis, Jatropha curcas L, and Brunfelsia). The study aimed to evaluate the toxicity in saline artemia by hydroalcoholic extracts of leaves of medicinal plants of the Peruvian Amazon. A phytochemical analysis of the leaves of the medicinal plants was performed to identify their active components. For the hydroalcoholic extraction, 300 g of leaves were used and dried extracts were obtained at concentrations of 10, 100 and 1000 µL/mL. The toxicity of the extract of each plant species in 10 larvae of Artemia was evaluated by triplicate tests. It was observed that chemical compounds such as steroids, triterpenes, quinones, phen...

The use of natural resources is an alternative for the discovery of new therapeutic agents. The active compounds derived from plants could be used as substitutes of pharmaceutical products for the control of diseases caused by microorganisms. In this study, the antibacterial potential of the hydroalcoholic extract of the fruit leaves was evaluated in gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6633) and gram-negative Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853). Theobroma cacao leaves were used. Cocos nucifera, Musa paradisiaca and Coffea sp. The hydroalcoholic extract was prepared by the maceration method. A phytochemical analysis was performed on the extracts to identify secondary metabolites. A total of 48 Mueller-Hinton agar plates with 1 mL of bacterial in...

While germination is the means by which the vast majority of the world's flora regenerate naturally, a framework for accurately predicting which species are at greatest risk of germination failure during environmental perturbation is lacking. Taking a physiological approach, we assess how one family, the Cactaceae, may respond to global temperature change based on the thermal buffering capacity of the germination phenotype. We selected 55 cactus species from the Americas, all geo-referenced seed collections, reflecting the broad environmental envelope of the family across 70° of latitude and 3700 m of altitude. We then generated empirical data of the thermal germination response from which we estimated the minimum (Tb ), optimum (To ) and ceiling (Tc ) temperature for germination and the thermal time (θ50 ) for each species based on the linearity of germination rate with temperatu...

The Social Readjustment Rating Scale is one of the instruments most frequently used to measure vital stress, which has been quantified asking judges to evaluate the magnitude of social readjustment required by a person when experiencing different events and the mean number of points assigned by the judges are known as Life Change Units. The purpose of the present study was to translate-retranslate from English to Spanish the SRRS for elementary school children and obtain the LCU's for each event. Elementary school teachers (N = 192) acted as judges. Spearman order correlations showed that Mexican teachers agreed highly in their judgments both, among themselves and with the American judges of the original study (Coddington, 1972). Mexican judges depending on their sociodemographic characteristics judged some vital events as more severe.

Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family members include TGF-β, activins, and bone morphogenet... more Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family members include TGF-β, activins, and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP). These proteins are structurally related cytokines secreted in diverse Metazoans. TGF-β family members regulate cellular functions such as proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and migration, and play an important role in organism development. Deregulated TGF-β family signaling participates in various human pathologies including autoimmune diseases, vascular disorders, fibrotic disease, and cancer. Ligand-induced activation of TGF-β family receptors with intrinsic serine/threonine kinase activity, triggers phosphorylation of the intracellular effectors of TGF-β signaling, the Smads proteins. Once these proteins are activated they translocate into the nucleus, where they induce transcription of target genes and regulate cellular processes and functions. Novel therapeutic strategies are currently being developed to correct alterations in pathologies that involve TGF-β as the main mediator.

Teachers (N = 691) rated the frequency which a "normal" student emitted each of the 18 ADHD characteristic behaviors during class hours. Results showed that men, teachers older than 42 years, of low socioeconomic status, teaching first and second grade, which had more than 38 students in public schools considered normal the frequent emission of the behaviors during class hours in a greater degree than their counterparts. It was concluded that the socio-demographic characteristics of elementary school teachers as well as some situational variables affect their tendency ...

It is a rare but feared complication due to its serious morbidity. We report two male patients who were diagnosed with air embolism as a complication of computed tomography-guided transthoracic needle biopsy. Both patients referred respiratory symptoms minutes after the procedure. The chest computed tomography of one of the patients showed air in the left ventricle and ascending aorta, and in the other, air was noted only in the left ventricle. Both patients suffered myocardial infarction without associated mortality. One patient showed anthracotic dust deposits in the lung biopsy suggestive of pneumoconiosis, and there was no definitive diagnosis in the other. We strongly believe that because of the very low incidence but high mortality of this entity, all physicians should be aware of this complication in order to know how to proceed in this situation.

Based on their natural environment, we hypothesized that low temperatures would be important for germination in theses species. We addressed two questions (i) do Placea seeds require chilling for seed germination? (ii) if they required chilling, does thermal history before chilling affect their responsivity to chilling? At 4ºC seeds of all species germinated faster and to a higher level than at 25ºC. After 28 days, when seeds held at 25ºC were moved to 4ºC, germination increased significantly, however at the end of the assay, their germination was still lower than those seeds initially at 4ºC. Thus, Placea seeds required chilling for germinate. Seeds of Placea species might have physiological dormancy or might be non-dormant but with narrow and low range of temperature that are optimal for germination.

The catalytic subunit of DNA-PK, PRKDC, may also be involved in repair-related or separate cell signaling pathways. To learn more about the cellular function of DNA-PK under normal physiological conditions, we identified genes that are differentially expressed between an immortalized wild-type mouse fibroblast cell line and its DNA-PK-deficient counterpart (Prkdc −/−). The proto-oncogene Mdm2 and the farnesoid X receptor gene Nr1h4 were overexpressed in the DNA-PK-deficient cell line. We show that in the DNA-PK-deficient cell line the genes for both Mdm2 and Nr1h4 are amplified to a degree that could account for most, if not all, of their increased expression. Other genes were strongly downregulated in the DNA-PK-deficient cell line, but this opposite expression pattern was not due to gene amplification in the wild-type cells. None of these genes was differentially expressed in DNA-PK-containing and DNA-PK-deficient primary mouse embryo fibroblasts. Our results suggest a model in which DNA-PK indirectly affects the cellular gene expression profile through its caretaker role and by preventing gene amplification.
