Nonstructural earthquake damage results in extensive repair costs and lengthy functional disruptions, as nonstructural systems comprise the majority of building investment and are essential to building operations. A better understanding of the expected overall seismic performance of code-compliant buildings is needed. This study investigates the seismic performance of a conventional building. A 16-storey steel office building was designed using a modern seismic structural code (Eurocode 8). This study is the first to assess in detail the substantial earthquake repair costs expected in a modern Eurocode concentric braced frame structure, considering nonstructural systems with the FEMA P-58 procedure. The breakdown of total repair costs by engineering demand parameter and by fragility group is novel. The seismic performance assessment indicated that substantial earthquake repair costs are expected. Limitations of the Eurocode nonstructural damage methodology were revealed in a novel manner using FEMA P-58, as the prescribed drift limits did not minimize nonstructural repair costs. These findings demonstrate the need for design procedures that improve nonstructural seismic performance. The study results provide a benchmark on which to evaluate retrofit alternatives for existing buildings and design options for new structures.

This study was done to determine the relationship between self-care and glycosylated hemoglobin level diabetic patients in rural area in Golestan Province, northern Iran. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was done on 239 male and female patients with type 2 diabetes (56.92±10.70 years) in rural area in Golestan Province, northern Iran during 2016. Data collection tool were a standard diabetes self-care questionnaire with demographic variables and HbA1C test. The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiologic status of animal bite and the effect of wasting stray dogs on the incidence of animal bites in Galikesh County since 2009 until 2013. Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional study with descriptive-analytical approach. A total of 1712 animal-bitten cases who were residing in Galikesh during the years of 20092013 were enrolled by census method. Data were collected from the recorded documents of animal-bitten individuals and analyzed by SPSS. Results: Of all cases, 1203 (70.3%) individuals were male and 509 (29.7%) were female. Regarding the age, cases were ranged between 1 to 89 years with a mean and standard deviation of 26.88 ± 18.39 years. The majority of bite cases (92.3%) were related to dogs. A new method of retrofitting reinforced concrete (RC) frames with buckling-restrained braces (BRB... more A new method of retrofitting reinforced concrete (RC) frames with buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) to improve frame strength, stiffness and energy dissipation is proposed. Instead of typical post-installed anchors, load is transferred between the BRB and RC frame through compression bearing between an installed steel frame connected to the BRB, and high-strength mortar blocks constructed at the four corners of the RC frame. This avoids complex on-site anchor installation, and does not limit the allowable brace force by the anchor strength. Cyclic displacements of increasing amplitudes were imposed on two RC frame specimens retrofitted with different BRB strength capacities. In one of the frames, the bearing blocks were reinforced with wire mesh to mitigate cracking. A third RC frame was also tested as a benchmark to evaluate the retrofit strength and stiffness enhancements. Test results indicate that the proposed method efficiently transferred loads between the BRBs and RC frames, increasing the frame lateral strength while achieving good ductility and energy-dissipating capacity. When the bearing block was reinforced with wire mesh, the maximum frame lateral strength and stiffness were more than 2.2 and 3.5 times the RC frame without the BRB respectively. The BRB imposes additional shear demands through the bearing blocks to both ends of the RC beam and column member discontinuity regions (D-regions). The softened strut-and-tie model satisfactorily estimated the shear capacities of the D-regions. A simplified calculation and a detailed PISA3D analysis were shown to effectively predict member demands to within 13.8% difference of the measured test results.
This article attempts to study the effect of various pulse-like ground motion parameters and loca... more This article attempts to study the effect of various pulse-like ground motion parameters and local site conditions on the linear response of different multi-story buildings with special shear and flexural behavior. A total of 61 near-fault pulse-like ground motions are selected for this study. The effects of peak ground velocity (PGV), PGV/PGA, rupture distance, arias intensity, earthquake magnitude and local site conditions on maximum inter-story drift spectra (MIDS) and distribution of the inter-story drift ratio (IDR) along the height of the multi-story buildings are evaluated. The multi-story buildings are modeled using a combination of a shear and flexural beams with representative lateral stiffness ratios. It was observed that both the fundamental period of the structure and the lateral stiffness ratio can significantly change maximum inter-story drift demands in buildings subjected to pulse-like ground motions.
