The cooling capacity, system performance coefficient and the daily rate of available cooling energy are assessed. The main goal is to compare the performances of a solar adsorption chiller equipped with a hot water tank (HWT) with an equivalent system relying on solar collectors with no heat storage module. The daily cooling rates for the solar refrigerator are found to be 102.4 kWh and 74.3 kWh, respectively, on June 21st and on September 21st, using a total collector's area of 43.47 m 2. The corresponding values for the adsorption chiller equipped with a hot water tank of 2 m 3 (and using a total collector's area of 72.45 m 2), are 127.1 kWh and 106.13 kWh, respectively.

After the estimation of the climatic data and the storage room-cooling load for representative days in the months of March (spring), June (summer), September (autumn) and December (winter), a dynamic performance study of a tow-bed silica-gel/water adsorption refrigerator driven by a CPC collector over the 4 referential days is done. The focus is to study the possibility to drive this storage room by an adsorption refrigerator directly driven by CPC collector. A Matlab/Simulink model describing the adsorption unit, the solar collectors and the storage room was used to simulate the performances of the installation. A maximum average cyclic coefficient of performance of 0.45 and average cooling power of 11.6 kW are obtained on day 21 June. The adsorption chiller can be driven by the solar CPC collectors and provide cooling for most of the daytime.

After the estimation of the storage room cooling load, which is equal to 13 kW, a parametric study, aims to improve, the performance of the chiller is done in order to achieve the storage room need and to estimate the required heat in the refrigerator generator. A theoretical model, based on the thermodynamics of the adsorption process, heat and mass transfer within the porous medium and energy balance in the system components, is developed and a simulation with Matlab/Simulink, is carried out. The model was established and validated with the literature experimental data. A maximum coefficient of performance of 0.52 and cooling load of 22 kW are reached at cycle time of 800 seconds, the inlet temperatures of heating, cooling and chilled water are 85°C, 22°C and 15°C, respectively.
