For some time, I have subscribed to the belief that by propagating and losing two world wars over the last century, Europe lost the right to artistic, economic, moral and philosophical leadership. The history of Europe is characterized by the division of economic status and race subsumed in hierarchy. There is something wrong with European thought processes. This corruption is what the Dadaists, the Surrealists, Wassily Kandinsky, John Heartfield, Kurt Schwitters and others tried to point out and avert in their art. Because they failed, Europe failed too. It has fallen to us in the New World to remove that mantle. When we perpetuate European manners and values in our cultural institutions and academies, we inch towards failure. To succeed, we must throw off the cloak of European history and culture and stumble forward in the darkness of our selves, seeking the forms and visions of a New World culture. In 2009, Dirk de Bruyn presented an hour long, multi-screen, live cinema performance, Retinex Ref... more In 2009, Dirk de Bruyn presented an hour long, multi-screen, live cinema performance, Retinex Reflux, in Auckland's Gus Fisher Gallery. Employing up to five analog film projectors, Retinex Reflux expressed a lament of a conflicted self in cinema, casting self across and intervening amongst projected images, filtering and masking parts of the image, almost as a laconic variation on Paul Sharits' Epileptic Seizure Comparison (1976).De Bruyn's performance was born from the artist's childhood traumas, which include his transplantation from the Netherlands to Australia as an eight-year-old, his father's subsequent mental illness then death, and his lifetime involvement with cinema, a medium now allegedly dead. Throughout the performance, de Bruyn roamed restlessly around the space in a shadow-play of flicker and afterimages, issuing a series of pre-verbal groans and utterances of half-remembered loss and pain.
