Nevertheless, the Kenyan press has so far failed to take advantage of an ideal opportunity for such an experiment in reporting on the war against terror. Kenya's press still operates within the war journalism framework. This paper employs a theoretical approach that combines theories of media representation in mainstream journalism with the concepts of peace journalism. Methodologically, it adopts a triangulating approach, employing both quantitative and qualitative content analysis to study the representations of Operation Linda Nchi by the Kenyan Daily Nation and The Standard and thereby offers a critical appraisal of the possibility for peace journalism to cover international terrorism in Africa.

The study covered a population of 18,775 according to the 2009 National Census Report. The study was informed by literature that supported the presumption that, the youth rarely communicate with their parents on matters of HIV and this is a reality that increases their vulnerability. The study used Social Learning Theory and Health Belief Model to demonstrate how the youth can learn from their parents through modelling. Significance: The study aimed at giving in-depth information to some traditional cultural values and practices in the community which may not be relevant or practical in a contemporary society, this is in connection that culture and communication are always changing. The study may p...

The latter often leads to radicalization and recruitment into violent extremism and terrorism and those more vulnerable are the youth (including women1). The media has been used for ethnic polarization every electoral cycle in Kenya, for unreality, fake news and disinformation that has fuelled political conflict and natural resource conflicts. Those on the receiving end of the negative exploitation of social media are the youth. However, part of the reason why the youth are easily targeted is because they are most exposed to social media networks by virtue of the fact that social media spaces are the modern public spheres of youth expression as virtual reality increasingly determines sensory reality. The youth, unaware of the implications of the use of web 2.0 technologies, are readily influenced by wha...

The study was prompted by the fact that despite several conflicts experienced in secondary schools in Kenya, very minimal research has been conducted to investigate potential causes of unrests in schools related to inappropriate communication by school principals. The study focused on women principals because it is normally assumed that women have better communication strategies and that their schools experience less conflicts. However, a review of relevant literature shows this issue has not been established through research, especially, in the Kenyan context. The specific research questions were: 1. what communication strategies are utilised by women principals to manage workplace conflicts 2. How do the women principals utilize these strategies? This study was informed by relativist-interpretivist paradigm which is consi...

The article argues that the Kenyan press presents a stereotypical and sensational view of intimate partner violence. Although the violence was overly presented as a problem afflicting women, such coverage was to some degree merited in the face of existing evidence showing that it affects more women than men. However, this coverage should also be reflective of the extent to which the public discourse agrees with such a perspective given similar reports of female perpetrated violence in the country. The article examines the headlines, photographs, captions and cartoons used to represent the contexts of the violence. It also analyses the metaphors, analogies and intertexts in selected stories to thematically unpack their meanings. The representation of intimate partner violence using the textual forms connote the existence of a proble...

The paper cites the role the Kenyan media played in the election crisis, acknowledging its success but at the same time questioning its failure to protect various aspects of democracy such as the election process. This it does by mentioning the work of various Kenyan journalists who criticised the election process through the media. The paper uses the ideal concept of democratic thought as conceptualised by the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas to examine clinically democracy in Africa and propose an alternative system of human relations as presented by the Ghanaian thinker Stephen Appiah to indicate a move to a more egalitarian society that still recognises liberal ideals.
